parties and stereotypes

I know there's the stereotype of being a 'geek' if you're not in greek life, but are there ways you can still be invited to formals or parties when you're not affiliated with a sorority/ fraternity? And honestly, do people really consider you so much of a 'geek' if you don't rush?
