harsh reality of life

by:

Not everyone gets what they want. If you are disappointed because you didn’t get a bid to sorority 1-6, too bad. There are two sororities with amazing girls that would love to have you. If you are as astounding as you say, then use those attributes to make 7 & 8 the top sororities here. It can be done. It happens all the time. Life isn’t fair and YOU chose to go to SMU and rush. Stop whining about Panhellenic and either transfer or join one of the amazing sororities that are participating in cob. Your constant posts are rude and offensive to the wonderful girls who chose to make the best of rush.

Chill OP! YOU announced for everyone to either TRANSFER or pledge COB with AXO or GPB! Let the girl say she’s gonna transfer! YOU don’t get to win every argument and THAT’S the harsh reality of life.

OP was standing up for GPB and AXO. The constant posts saying it isn’t fair those were her only bids is ridiculous and an insult to the amazing girls who do take a chance. In the rants against rush, she literally has said they aren’t worth the money, have poor social status etc. Wth? That is harsh not telling someone to transfer if they aren’t happy.

The recruitment process stinks pretty much at any competitive school. Ask all the wonderful girls who didn't "get" PKT at Texas or Old Row at Bama. There are second or third choices that are great too. Girls manage to be happy outside those groups. Our problem here is that the great girls that didn't get their first or second choice quit and transfer rather than join a sorority they consider less. It would take one or two pledge classes of girls who stuck it out and pledged to turn those groups into top sororities. Seriously. Then every sorority would be competitive. And I get the disappointment. I do. It hurts to be a legacy and Prom Queen and student body president and not get your first pick. But if people didn't give up, what a strong Greek system we would have. And if you throw a tantrum and yell at members of a house offering you a bid you don't want...well, I hope the same thing happens at you wherever you go. Always be respectful. That is a life lesson you will never regret learning.

A less competitive rush would be a school where mommies and daddies would stay out of the process. Also, not being second, third, fourth generations of said sororities. Am I right?

A & M comes to mind. The greek systems there is probably bigger numbers-wise, but much less of an influence on campus social life. I think the Greek system there was also started later.

A&M is an excellent example. Membership numbers are similar to Texas with many great girls, just not as cutthroat or competitive. Also, you are right about the age of the Greek system. I don't think there were any sororities there until the 70s. They weren't co-ed until 60's or 70's, not sure exactly when, so Greek Life does't have a 100 year old history.

wouldn’t a bigger school be considered more competitive because more girls??

No, it wouldn't be more competitive at a larger school with more girls, cuz A&M doesnt put nearly as much importance on Greek hierarchy. If you don't want competition, choose a school that is not status oriented like that.

that’s crazy... well im not OP but I may want to transfer too i didn’t even rush for freshman year but reading this scares me.. schools like alabama tho which is huge are extremely competitive, it’s a hard way to judge. i’d prefer a more laid back rush tho ngl

How can you tell if a school is status orientated? I am also in the same boat and looking at future options in case I just end up hating smu this semester. California would be fun but idk

Don't just assume you can just transfer into the California schools (especially the U.C. schools). USC is less than 20% acceptance rate. UCLA and UC Berkeley (which is soooooooooo different in so many ways from SMU) are around 10% or so acceptance. IF you get in, and if you go through recruitment at USC or UCLA (more prestigious Greek systems) you will be competing with girls with stratospheric GPA's/honors and CA social connections. Same with University of WA and University of Arizona (...to a certain degree). My friends from high school who went to Berkeley say greek life is much less relevant, but recruitment (like everything at Berkeley) is very competitive (everybody as a 4.0+,top 5% of their class, etc.). You need to do some research before you high tail it out of SMU. Your options are probably more limited than you thought.

What the last poster said is so true about UT too.

Y'all gotta stop looking at recruitment as a competition. It's not. It's a way to find a home away from home by making close friends in a shared sisterhood and having fun. You are a real mess if you think that joining a certain sorority is some kind of award and that if you don't win it you have failed or suffered a terrible injustice, and that joining a different sorority would be insulting and make you an undesirable loser. Please give yourself some credit. There is no winning or losing at stake here, just life-long friendships with other beautiful sweet girls like yourself that you can choose to have in your life, or never even give yourself the chance to know.

Time to adult. If you were all that and a bag of chips, you would have gotten a bid to your desired chapter. Clearly they did not think you were the right fit for them, or you would've been on their bid list. Get over it. Move on.

that’s not true at all their was more than a couple spring girls that got dropped before day two just because they were unknown by the older girls.. it’s not a good idea to rush if ur a new transfer who knows NO one but still come on. it’s obvious most girls have a PRETTY relative idea of what houses will want them back and where they will end up
