for other moms - the scoop on smu rush
by: Rush MomMy daughter just went through rush. She wasn't nervous, but I was because of all the horrible postings on this site! (Yes, moms read this site, too). For any moms of future rushees, don't worry. My daughter is not from Texas and doesn't wear all designer clothes, but she had a great rush. She and her friends all got bids - some got their first choice, some their second or third choice, but for the most part all are happy. Yes, there are some disappointed girls and that happens (at ALL schools, not just SMU), but the whole process is not as terrible and mean as it's made out to be. The girls felt welcomed at all the houses, ended up liking many of the ones where they didn't know as many of the actives. And, of all the friends that have bids, only one was a legacy. Thank you SMU sororities for putting on a very nice rush and being so kind to the girls in spite of a selection process that is, at best, difficult for everyone.

Can we clear the air here about 'spots'? There is not a pre-determined number of 'spots'. It is only determined AFTER pref parties how many bids the chapters may offer AND the Quota Plus system ensures that every single pnm who signs a card after prefs is GUARANTEED A BID. Every sorority has the exact same number of bids to offer based on how many girls sign their MRABA card - Total Number of pnm's signing cards/number of sororities (8) = Quota. Then, any pnm's who don't initially match are still offered bids to one of their pref houses, as long as they didn't suicide, even when it puts a house over Quota. Girls drop because they won't give themselves and their fellow pnm's a chance in a house where they are wanted. If more girls would stay in the game then they would get bids and be in pledge classes with other girls in the same boat. This is how rush is conducted across the country. The more pnm's who stay in overall means more pnm's get bids across the board.

Sorry, no. Maybe at schools with fall rush there are PNMs who are naive about the process but at SMU we all know what we are getting into by January. No one thinks she is getting a bid because a Kappa had Starbucks with her one time. Also, my freshman year next door neighbor is a GPhi and she is as pretty and nice as they come, so that psycho who posts about 7&8 needs to get a life.
#13by: Hey, there
All of "this" is what happens when every kid gets a participation ribbon. Life is not fair. Get. Over. It. If your precious daughter gave EVERY chapter a fair shot, the right chapter for her would invite her to pref and bid day. Recruitment works out...if you let it. Just because you think you belong to XYZ Sorority, does not make it so. Reality check. Welcome to Dallas.

Stop numbering these sororities like they are worthless. The sorority that you are referring to as “number 8”, is very prestigious and well know sorority across the nation, they are also one of the first sororities to ever exist. So if you don’t want your daughter to be apart of that legacy then that’s your loss.
Also not like it matters any ways but bc your numbering them off this sorority is mid to top tier at any other school, it’s just SMU PNMs that treat them like dirt.

I was a rho gamma in this past recruitment and it makes me so happy to hear that lots of girls had a good experience. As a recruitment advisor I get all of the calls of girls crying or who were upset. I hope that I was able to help those girls out at least a little but and I’m SO HAPPY for the girls it worked out for. This site can be nasty and mean so thank you for sharing good news

The 2022 sorority rush at SMU has lived up to all the bad press I’ve encountered about the process. SMU historically has had issues with non-legacy girls being passed over. SMU continues avoid disclosing their limited opportunity to join the top sororities. I agree with a prior post thst prior year recruitment results that include legacy versus non-legacy be disclosed to them months in advance. Failure to disclose and to allow “dirty” rush is completely misleading these young women in thinking joining SMU sororities is an obtainable goal. I agree it is "cruel and deceitful.” What a needless disappointment for so many non-legacy girls. It’s been a horrible experience for my daughter and many others.

I've known several GPBs and it makes me furious that someone would intentionally slander an entire sorority because they are not the same as another sorority. And the lady who keeps equating the dollars spent on an education with the expectation that her daughter will be in a top 3 sorority is beyond laughable. I feel so sorry for her, but especially for her daughter.
