rush is coming up.

by: Ajajhs

This is basically the last week before finals. Every frat is having formals.

Am I screwed? I didn’t get invited to any and stopped getting text. Honest opinions not bs answers. Am I screwed for getting a good/decent bid since formal rush barely matters

How does formal rush even work? Can someone give like a rundown?

There are minor changes every year, but it has stayed somewhat the same.

First days starts with rounds where you spend 15 minutes at every house. You will get invited to some events that night, but the next day you will get an email with every house that said that they would like to have you back. This is not a bid, but you are likely to get a bid from one of these houses. You will do visits on your own this day and you will hopefully get invited to some more parties that night. Depending on the year there will either be one or two days of this.

Each day the amount of houses that will invite you back will get smaller, this is not personal, but houses have to do this because they are only allowed to give a certain amount of bids. When Sunday comes around you will get your bids in an envelope and you will take whatever bid you want from your envelope. Once you choose your bid, formal rush is officially over and you'll go celebrate with your new fraternity at their house and have a blast.

Is it better to travel with a group. Like my friends are gonna get a bid from one frat. Should I travel with them

Traveling in a group is a good idea. However I spent the first half of my freshman year doing that and I spent a lot of time with a frat that I could not stand the people in and ended up doing my own thing. Make sure its a frat that you would like to go to. There is not a lot of time left in the year and at this point you should probably have a list of which frats you would want to be a part of.

Also during rush week, DO NOT go to a party that you were not invited to, even if your friend group is there. Invite lists will only get smaller every day of rush week and going to a place that won't take you will also ruin your chances at other places because it shows that you don't have an interest. It is pretty easy to get invited if you tell the rush chair that you are friends with a lot of people rushing that house and that you have interest in their fraternity. Just don't be a complete goob and you should be fine.

Travel with a group but don't present yourself as part of a package deal. That is a good way to eliminate yourself from a bid you want when they like you but wouldn't want to bid your friend. If you feel at home at a house then let that fraternity know that you are your own man and not deciding based on what others think.
