to the 175+ girls who dropped out of recruitment
by: Senior Woman
To the 175+ girls who dropped out of recruitment, I was once you too. I went into SMU knowing a few girls from my high school who were in a “top” sorority, and was given verbal bids by them I had nothing to worry about. My freshman year I went through rush, and was devastated to find they had dropped me on Pref. Even though I had houses left on my list, I dropped out of recruitment because I felt like I was too good for the houses I had left.
I rushed again sophomore year again promised by this same “top” sorority that it would all work out. Again, on Pref I was dropped and was devastated. I ended up joining a “lower” tier sorority since I thought I would transfer schools anyway. Deciding I had nothing to loose I pledged, and it was one of the best decisions I made in college.
Every sorority at SMU has mixers, big/little, philanthropy, and sisterhoods full of amazing women. I’ll be real, my only complaint about joining a “lower” tier sorority was not having as many mixers as my upper tier friends. But whenever I wanted to go out and their wasn’t a mixer, a group of all my friends would just go to Barely or Uptown and have a great night. In addition, after sophomore year no girls in ANY sororities really go to mixers since upperclassmen would rather be at bars anyway. At Home Bar Thursdays we’re all mustangs together.
It’s true we need another house on campus, but until every sorority is consistently making quota (45-60 girls depending on the year) a new sorority will not be added to campus. In addition, while there is a formal process for picking a new sorority on campus it will 90% be ADPi as they have been trying to get back on campus for DECADES, as well as Kathy Bates was a member while she attended SMU.
To the girls who dropped out, trust me I understand it sucks! You feel like you did something wrong or for some reason you’re not good enough, but honestly once you’re on the other side you realize it’s not you, but a numbers game. Each sorority can only take so many girls and even if you’re in the top 100 girls they want on their list, it's still crazy hard to get a bid. There is a reason SMU is one of the top ten most competitive sorority rushes in the country. SMU has so many triple in house legacies, people’s sisters or cousins within the house, that unless you have a relative at SMU it’s very hard to get the bid of your choice.
I encourage all girls to truly give every house on this campus a chance. If you want to truly be apart of a sorority with sisterhood, philanthropies, and even parties, EVERY house on this campus will give you it. If all you care about is status, then you are not joining a sorority for the right reasons and is probably why you were dropped in the first place. Every sorority wants girls to like them for who they are, not because of their sororities name. In addition, if anyone at SMU ever thinks they are better than you because of their sorority or talks down to you, all it is doing is expressing their own insecurities and has nothing to do with you.
At the end of the day your letters don’t define you, YOU DEFINE YOUR LETTERS.

Thank you, this is very well said. This is a good time to point out that there is no such thing as a 'verbal bid'. If girls in a house like you and want you they will be gracious and encouraging but they don't speak for their entire chapter, and a bid comes from the chapter not from what some member verbally says. Girls will say they like you and tell you that they can see you fitting in as a member or that you shouldn't have a problem getting in or they hope to see you tomorrow at whatever round. This is not a bid! No one can promise anyone a bid! Bid promising is illegal in the NPC and if you think somebody actually told you point blank "you're getting a bid" then you need to report them. Otherwise it isn't bid promising.

Ladies, if someone gave you an oral bid report them. ASAP. That house already cut you, there is no changing their mind for next year or reason to protect them. Panhellenic is trying very very hard to make this issue stop and houses are all aware of the (pretty extreme) consequences. Not only does verbal bidding hurt you, it hurts our community and erodes trust in the recruitment process.

We see Panhellenic paid Greek Rank to REMOVE the GDI Terrible Week Post. The points made on that Post were read by over 400 viewers. Lets all hope there will be changes made to the manipulated recruiting process next year.
The major factual points were as follows:
The University in 2015 moved the full tuition refund date to the week before the final results were announced. Any freshman wanting out of the University after receiving her rush results would be subject to a 10% cut to her tuition and housing refund.
Keep in mind most freshmen do not have cars on campus so they would have to get their parents to drive to Dallas in their large SUV on snow / ice filled roads to pack and move her out. We just learned the University requires the student to be out of her dorm by Friday, January 26th at 5pm, a short 5 days after receiving her rush results, to prevent losing 50% of her housing refund. Extending the deadline through the weekend was Not Allowed to give parents time to drive to Dallas. A premeditated captive strategy to keep these 175+ newly GDIs at SMU for the Spring semester. EVIL.
Most of the newly GDIs were encouraged to proceed with COB to find a possible opening. Only sorority 7 & 8 were involved in COB this week. These were the sororities most were Not Interested In. Once realized of the GDI reality, it was Wednesday, far too late to transfer to another university or to ask your parents the short notice to make the dangerous wintery drive to Dallas.
It was pointed out that a vast majority of the top 6 sorority PCs were pre-determined. Only a few true openings were actually available to the non-connected. Fall Sophomore rush is very similar to COB. Only sorority 7 & 8 usually take pledges. Those Sophomores that go through recruitment a second time in the Spring are usually cut early and are given bids from sorority 7 & 8 again. Sorority 7 may cut you as a sophomore.
Pretty depressing. Tonight, my roommate and many of the newly pledged girls are out at sorority parties. The 10 -12 newly GDIs on our floor are studying or watching the Shopping Network. We did nothing to deserve this social isolation. Just obeyed the recruitment rules and trusted the top 6 sororities with their verbal bid encouragement. We are stuck here as social outcasts by design of the University and Panhellenic.

The posts above reflect the University's policy to change the tuition and housing refund timeline to capture 175+ tuition and housing paying freshman from dropping SMU in the Spring. The loss of these payments would be a substantial financial loss to the University.
The lack of response by Panhellenic while recruitment drops have dramatically increased over the past few years has been noted. Having approximately 1/3 of PMNs drop from this years recruitment is an alarming Panhellenic failure.

You can't blame the pnms for wanting what their friend's have. I mean, we're talking about 18 year olds here. This is sad. I'm so sorry the system failed you. I agree that there shouldn't be forcing girls to go to houses where they are not interested, but would also like to see a solution to help ALL the houses be desirable and not just 6 of them.

If you are sitting around with 10-12 "newly GDIs" and having a pity party by watching the home shopping network, planning to transfer, it seems like you could be more rodictive by taking those 12-14 people and together becoming pledge sisters in a house that has a bid for you. All of you are fabulous, right? And you have established this bond of studying and tv (sounds similar to sorority life with study sessions and bachelor Mondays to me). All the freshmen are in dorms no matter what house. So now everyone notices the amazing PC at X house and you are with people you fit in with (your PC sisters from the original pity party). If you hatevit after six weeks you don't activate. No harm no foul. And if you are transferring ANYWAY then figure out where X house has a strong chapter. If you have activated, you will already be in the that great house when you arrive. Honestly get over yourself and get a better game plan.

I was a big deal in my high school, like, I was considered popular and we had, like, 200 people in my graduating class. I helped my mom write some great essays about why I wanted to come to SMU and decided to come here because it was warm and I could have pretty friends and hang out in Dallas. Greek life is my RIGHT. I even got a tattoo of the house I wanted before recruitment to show my commitment and then they CUT ME. I don't need or want any advice. This is the worst thing that ever happened to me! Why should I have to show I care about grades and extracurriculars? Asking alums for recs is for idiots. So is spending time getting to know anyone in the houses or what philanthropy they support. I wasn't going to any of their dumb fall events. I just want to go to Black Diamond and paint a cooler! Oh yeah I mean I only posted a few offensive things and I edited my photos for slight improvements and only slept with a few boyfriends of girls in the house but it's not like anyone knows. The university is SO MEAN. I don't know why I even applied here in the first place. If I got into, I mean, went to another school I could have for sure gotten into a "top" house so I'm leaving. \n\n\n\n\n

If you won’t give COB a chance since you clearly think you’re “above” it you don’t deserve to be in any sorority and deserve to spend your nights alone.
