by: bridgis it hard to get a bid if you haven't like gone out with the sorority before actual rushing starts? also how do you get to know people to take you out/talk to the girls before rushing starts

Depends what you're interested in! Technically taking rushes to parties is against Geneseo's policy but must sororities will invite their rushes out to get to know you better outside of a rush event setting. Once recruitment starts in the spring nationals stop taking people out but locals will use those 2 weeks to invite girls out that haven't been invited out yet. Also sororities that don't take fall pledge classes (like AGO) do the bulk of their rushing in the fall and usually have less events in the spring because they already have a good idea of who they want by that time. My advice to you would be to follow sorority social media accounts to see when their rush events are because thats the best way to meet the girls if you don't already know anyone in that org. If not girls get really excited about rush so if you see someone out or in class wearing letters definitely say hi and ask them about rush. I know it can be intimidating but with rush you have to step a little out of your comfort zone and put yourself out there.

For locals - yes, for the most part it is important that you have developed relationships with some of the girls in the sorority. This is often because by the time bids comes around they want to know that they can trust you to go through the pledging process (and if you were to depledge that you wouldn't run to the school and rat on them about hazing). There are girls who make it through the rush process in the spring without ever going out with the sorority in the fall - most of time these are older girls though.
Nationals - there is absolutely no need to be rushed. Yes, some girls in the sororities take people out in the fall, but that's no indication of your chances. It's stupid that they take people out, but it's how they win some girls over from locals.

If you're not in their rush Facebook group you should definitely request to join that. Sororities get excited about rush and are always looking to meet new girls. If they don't have any events coming up posted in the Facebook group, you should maybe Facebook message someone and express and interest in rushing? I know it might sound awkward but sororities are generally very receptive to girls they don't know reaching out in the fall because they like to get to know girls before rush (especially if you're a freshman).
