Sororities are all female and start admitting women at freshman year as pledges.

Societies are coed and they are generally senior year.

So you can join both? What are societies about and what are the benefits of joining one?

you can be in both. societies are primarily for senior year. they have junior societies but those are less popular and you don't meet very often if at all. it's a way to get to know more people and the selection process is arguably less elitist/predictable than sororities/frats, but that's just my opinion.
