if you don't get into a society...

by:

It's okay. relax. Only 1/5th of your class will get into a non YSI society, and most people just get in because their friends were in the class above. Yes, that's pretty much how it works for all societies. Some may claim to be about merit, achievement, etc., but at the end of the day, if you're not very close (junior friend #1) with a senior in a society, you probably won't get the tap.

It's not the end of the world, and your senior year won't suffer. Relax, and enjoy the rest of yale.

coming from someone in a society this is good advice! not all my friends are in societies (whether they didn't get in or quit the one they were in) and they're doing just fine

1) my society doesn’t do a friend tap thing where everyone picks their successor. We have to come to a consensus on each member of the delegation which is often based on aquaintances or people we know of
2) you should absolutely try society, and you can with YSI. Do that as a backup option so you have the society experience. drop out of you don’t like it.
3) highly recommend that you don’t go into the process cold and not apply to YSI. Don’t be like the Quorum people who didn’t form until like halfway of fall semester because all their friends were doing society stuff every Thursday and Sunday and they were lonely. They literally were just a group of friends who hung out Thursdays and Sundays in the cambridge or in SigEp bc they weren’t in society and only recently became a pseudo society.

Im OP- let me reframe it: I generally agree with what you said, but in order for someone to even nominate you, they have to know you really well and like you. people don't nominate acquaintances. This is all to say that the process is very arbitrary and not meritocratic in any sense at all.
