[societies]ignore the "psa" society thread-fake news!
by: !!!!!!!!
I'm honestly confused by the original poster of that thread. Yes, you should not stress about the process. And yes, you should not suck up or rely on people in your organizations to get you in because that's just not how it works. But the rest of the post and the first commenter of that post is just fake news...I'm sorry. Stop that.
The poster says "I see how inconsequential society was on my senior year." This is a problematic statement because you generalize your own sucky experience to everyone else. Society has been an incredible social outlet and all of us have been very involved. I think most societies are like this. Society is what you make of it and I'm so sorry the OP of that post hasn't had a good experience.
The poster says "society should be like 1% of senior year at most" This really trivializes the experience I'm sorry your experience sucked. If you're like most societies, you will meet every Thursday and Sunday for like 2-5 hours as well as be continually connected in a groupchat. There's a lot of connection and bonding that goes with forming a new family on campus and creating activities and sharing biographies. Yes, societies will NOT take over your life, but they are not 1%.
Finally, a commenter said that every senior gets like one nomination so they don't waste time on acquaintances. This is just false. Many societies will interview up to 100 candidates (there's a YDN article to back this up if you don't believe me). Yes, some societies (I think 2) hold a debate and invite friends to those and choose people based on their performance at the debate. Yes, Skull and Bones hand-picks their people because virtually everyone accepts their offer. But most societies will reach out to friends as well as a WIDE CROSS-SECTION of campus to get a diverse tap class. That comment is just total fake news.

No, I agree with the other poster, aside from the "should be 1%" comment. You are doing the opposite of what they did. Their main points are valid: 1. don't stress too much about society- you can't control if you get tapped, 2. the acquaintance part is real AF- societies literally can only pick one person to replace each member; last year, my society gave out 15 original taps, and 10 people accepted. They had to choose 5 more. While they did interview close to 100, they only ended up accepting 20. So, only 20% of the people we interviewed got in. Considering that the group of 100 was already incredibly self selecting, it had a super low acceptance rate, as most societies do.
