they should probably just continue doing the numerous and aggressive diversity and inclusion initiatives they are already doing and ignore psycho online trolls with a political agenda

Well they didn't. And by writing about this in the YDN, they really messed up. Ignoring all of this drama as you say would have been their only option to shrug this off, by saying "oh it's anonymous, it's probably all a few angry trolls." By writing about this in the LITERAL YDN, they made the issue real. They did this to themselves.
