societies vs greek?
by: EmilyI do not go here (I go to school in the South) but I am curious about the whole society thing, I find it fascinating. How does it work? Are there other "chapters" of the societies at other schools? How do they compare to traditional fraternities and sororities? Do you pay dues? What is "tapping"? Are the societies supposed to be secret? Is it more respected to be in a society rather than Greek, or are people often a part of both?

Greek Life is sort of minimal. You don't "rush" societies. You get selected via a "secret" email or a handwritten letter put under your door. Some have giant stone windowless tombs where they conduct meetings/mixers/parties/debates, others have houses, others don't have anything at all. Most have a sizeable endowment from alumni.
There are no chapters in other schools. It's only Yale. Some societies have been around since the 1800s (Skull and Bones).
