will being overweight cause me issues during rush?
by: AmyI am overweight. I know it, but I have other things going for me. How much will this affect me getting into the sorority of my choice and which sororities should I not bother with considering?

weight seems to matter to top tier sororities (if you disagree with me just look at the girls in Sigma, Phi mu, or zta and try and find atleast 5 overweight girls, this is virtually impossible) but for the rest of Greek life it's all about personality and being and embracing who you are.

Don't listen to half of these comments. If an organization doesn't want you because of your weight, then that's probably not an organization you should want to be in anyways. I know MANY organizations that could care less about that, recruitment is values based not appearance based! Stay positive, give it your all, and I'm sure you'll find somewhere you love!
#8by: recruitment sucks
Here's the thing: recruitment is hard on everyone who rushes, skinny, overweight, smart, not so smart, over achievers, under achievers - everyone. Saying your friends will join "top tiers" and drop you as a friend is ridiculous and shows how little you and your friends know about recruitment and greek life. Just because they are skinny/attractive does not give them automatic bids to "top tier" sororities. The top sororities are very difficult to get into (that's why they are considered "top"). There is a good chance that not all of them will get into a top sorority, let alone the same sorority. Recruitment is "mutual selection" but its weighted more towards the sororities and who they want - not who the PNM wants. Also, while I have best friends in my sorority, some of my best friends are in other sororities too! I love hanging out with them because we don't talk about sorority stuff. It's a great break from when greek life gets crazy! Almost all my sorority sisters have friends in other groups or who are not greek because it gives everyone a good balance. Stop being so concerned with where you friends MIGHT end up. Focus on yourself, work on your attitude and stop believing recruitment works a certain way. And you can still find a sorority home if you are overweight. But your attitude has to change!

Lol, it's her attitude not her weight. What great advice/assumptions... And they are telling you your friends can't get into any sorority like they know your friends.
It's pretty simple. Go rush and see where you fit and don't follow your friends. If you don't fit, don't continue Rush. Greek life is not a requirement. There's plenty of people where Greek Life is part of them versus defining them. It's just an overblown version of the Sorting Hat from Harry Potter. Don't take it so seriously, those people suck.

Sadly, it will affect you getting in to a lot of organizations. We don't take girls just because they are attractive or even because they are nice. However, there are a lot of standards organizations look for. We could talk to the nicest girl ever but drop her because she doesn't seem like she will improve our chapter by being given a bid (i.e. being a strong leader, being philanthropic, getting amazing grades). Unless you think you could significantly improve a chapter through being a member, you might not get in anywhere.
