what sororities should freshman keep an eye on?

by: Freshman

Description pretty much says it all. I'm going to be an incoming freshman and me (as well as some other girls I know) were just wondering which sororities we should keep an eye on? We're all planning on making our own decisions and going with the organization that we feel comfortable with, but I was just curious as to which orgs are rising or expecting to have a good year, if that makes any sense? I've just seen mixed opinions.

There was a lot of change with in the elon tiers after this years pledge classes and the dispute about tiers is usually from older classes but the two fastest rising sororities are Alpha Xi Delta and Kappa Delta so freshmen should really look at those but the tiers for the sororities at Elon currently are:

Top Tier:
Zeta Tau Alpha
Phi Mu
Sigma Sigma Sigma

Upper Mid Tier:
Alpha Xi Delta
Kappa Delta

Mid Tier:
Delta Delta Delta
Sigma Kappa

Bottom Tier:
Alpha Omicron Pi
Alpha Chi Omega

Person above me got it mostly right but im assuming they are in kappa delta because no one else at elon has KD anywhere near the top.

Top:
ZTA
Phi Mu
Sigma

Mid:
AZD (rising)
Sigma Kappa (falling)
Delta
AOII (rising)

Bottom:
KD
AXO

As a freshman, unless you are really good looking or know someone in ZTA, Phi Mu, or Sigma, they are reaches but still possible. Id look at AZD, Sigma Kappa and AOII. I know girls in those sororities and all of them are really nice, smart girls who love to have fun. thats my 2 cents.

Calling it now, you're an AOII and probably one of the older ones. The tiers have changed a lot and sororities like kd and azd have moved up. I'm not a kd, I'm an azd. But I agree that kappa delta has improved while sigma kappa has fallen, and aoii and delta have stayed the same.

I actually agree with the first poster and no, I'm not in kappa delta. If you look at some of the other discussion boards, a lot of people agree that azd and kd are the fastest rising orgs. My advice to the original poster is to keep a good eye on those two groups especially if you wouldn't consider yourself a top tier. AOII are great girls, but I don't think they are really rising yet. They have some good girls but are also extremely random. SK have nice and smart girls, but their sisterhood is extremely poor. Delta is a random mix, but I know a lot of happy girls there. AXO is a group for girls who are really just looking to be apart of something and aren't typical sorority girls. Their nice, usually considered less attractive but I know some beautiful AXOs. Here's my ranking:

Upper Tier (in order):
ZTA
Phi Mu
Tri Sigma

Mid Tier (in order):
AZD
KD
Tri Delta
Sigma Kappa

Bottom Tier (in order):
AOII
AXO

If you're looking for an upper tier sorority, I'd keep an eye on Phi Mu. I think they got a better pledge class then zeta and sigma. Looking at the middle tier, I think kappa delta and alpha xi delta are two great organizations that are rising quickly. In the bottom tier, I'd pick aopi over axo.

Honestly, just go with whichever sorority YOU feel comfortable at. I know its cliche, but you really will just know which one you fit in. Don't worry too much, you'll end up where you belong!

What does it take to be in a top tier sorority?

you have to be very good looking and know some of the sisters really well to be considered and sometimes that doesn't even get you in but honestly most of them have poor sisterhoods which is something you'd want in a sorority

It sucks to say, but a lot of it is looks. Most of those girls are gorgeous, but some are in based on connections. In every sorority, it helps to have connections those. Not saying that you can't get into an organization if you don't know anyone, but it does help a lot. But yeah, the previous poster is right. It's great having the status of "top tier" but they are like a clique. Unless you're in that "top tier", you probably don't see why they are considered on top when their sisterhood is so poor.

also to be honest most of the top tiers have been slipping while a good amount of the mid tiers have been rising

I agree. I think the tiers are going through massive changes and will continue to change. As a freshman, I think you should go in with an open mind and not immediately strive for these top tiers. Take a good look at some of the middle tiers like Alpha Xi Delta, Kappa Delta, and Delta Delta Delta. I see great change in the Elon rankings and I believe those sororities will eventually be the ones on top.

As a freshmen, shoot for the upper middle class because they are rising. Middle class is decent too. Bottom is just a bunch of nice girls and neither are falling or rising. If you think you can get top tier, go top tier. Just be warned, sisterhood is lacking. Honestly, just go wherever you feel comfortable and you'll be 100% okay.

This was actually so helpful :) I've seen a lot of posts with these rankings so I think they're pretty accurate! I'll definitely keep an open mind, but thanks for the help

Wait, has Sigma Kappa really fallen to #7? Just curious as to if a lot of people agree with that or if it's just a few.

yea its true azd and kd rose a lot after this year and they really didn't and their sisterhood isn't as strong as most other organizations ,individually there are great girls in it, but they have fallen

Unfortunately yes. The pledge class this year was so-so, but every year is just a step down from the year before. They don't work on their sisterhood which is key to being a good organization. I hardly even remember they're on campus and they're kind of vanilla. Like the other response said, there are some great girls individually, but together they just fall apart. They're definitely #7 after this past year.

Top tier doesnt mean the sisterhood is poor...Tri sigma is said to have the strongest sisterhood, and theres sisters in phi mu and zeta who feel the same way about their own organization. you really need to go where you'll be happy, and usually those will be the only places that will accept you---the ones where you fit in. It is very difficult to get in a top tier sorority, but if that is where you feel most at home..go for it! dont be intimidated during recruitment when you hear everyone has the same top 5...you will be fine wherever you end up

It's ok to keep an eye out and make friends with members in ALL the sororities. Keep in mind though, the sororities are the ones making the decisions on who to cut and who to invite back, the PNMs just rank which chapters they want to go back to. The PNMs never cut. By being friends with sisters in every group, they may keep inviting you back to rounds and you gain some more control over who you are going back to. If you think you are going to only be a ZTA, Phi Mu or Sigma and then get cut by all 3 by Sisterhood Round, you are selling your self short. Every group at Elon is different, and has strengths and their own weaknesses. So this fall - get to know people in every organization, be friendly and outgoing and don't be a drunk, or make a negative name for yourself.
