Why does Dartmouth have so many independent frats?

The reasons kind of vary, but the houses all have wikipedia pages... you should check em out for more detailed reasons
some that come to mind:
Tri-kap is the oldest local fraternity in the US and was founded at Dartmouth; because it was founded to be local, it was unlikely to go elsewhere.
Chi Heorot became local (used to be Chi Phi) over disagreement with nationals. In 1968, the Dartmouth chapter wanted to admit an African-American student but nationals disallowed it, so we broke off

You are all wrong. Chi Phi at Dartmouth had an African-American member in the 1950's. He was Harry Dodds, and he was also Treasurer of Dartmouth's Chi Phi chapter at the time.
Doesn't anyone pay attention to history these days?
