sigep comes roaring back...
by: NHAThe Dartmouth chapter of the Sigma Phi Epsilon National Fraternity announced today the launch of a rebuilding program that will result in an undergraduate organization that is the best student organization on campus… not just the best fraternity. Sigma Phi Epsilon is successful because SigEp is different. SigEp’s award-winning The Balanced Man Program (BMP) is exactly what young men need today—a continuous development experience focused on scholarship, leadership, and life skills that complements the classroom curriculum. Refinement of these crucial skills helps SigEp brothers succeed upon graduation and prepares them to achieve balance and satisfaction in every aspect of their lives.

Fraternities as they exist now are facing a crisis. Only 11% of students come to Dartmouth interested in joining a fraternity. This declining interest has coincided with the fact that members of fraternities are far more likely to drink in excess than the average student. Because our SigEp chapter has a substance-free policy, we will recruit better candidates and have stronger manpower than other fraternities chapters that are regrettably still beholden to illegal and dangerous drinking. SigEp is modeling a new way and new future for other Dartmouth fraternities to follow

SigEp stands out as a forward-thinking fraternity in all issues, including gender. SigEp has traditionally treated gender as binary, when we live in a world with increasing awareness that gender is not always binary. SigEp’s membership is currently restricted those persons who identify as male, but there is limited space in Greek communities across the country for non-binary individuals to engage.
SigEp is leading the way towards the future of Greek organizations in the United States as gender inclusive organizations. SigEp is convening a task force to explore removing any screening of gender from its membership criteria and this will also expand SigEp’s recruitment pool.

You can't drink your way to peer solidarity, mastery, ownership, or meaningful relationships. How many of Dartmouth's particular treasures or expectations of the future are created by alcohol? None. There is room for a new kind of fraternity at Dartmouth focused on principles.
