what's it like?
by: UKfreshman14Hi everyone! I apologize in advance for this somewhat long post ;) I have been accepted to University of Kentucky for this fall and I am really excited! I am not from Kentucky, nor have I ever been there, so I don't know much about the culture of the state or the university. The only southern state I have ever been to is Alabama, and I LOVED the southern hospitality and how kind, welcoming, and friendly everyone was. Does this state/school have that kind of atmosphere? Is greek life here super competitive where some sororities think they are above the others, or is it like one big family? One more thing.. I am very interested in politics and enjoy discussing it with others, even those I disagree with. Do people at this school conservative or liberal? Thanks!! :)

I'm from Kentucky, and I think this is one of the most friendly states I've ever been to. There are a lot of students from Cincinatti and Chicago, and I find that they always think they're more intelligent than someone, especially me, because I have an strong accent, but I can assure you that most of the people from Kentucky are extremely nice. We have a lot of fan involvement in all of our sports so it's always nice to experience that. I would suggest a campus visit and if you know anyone in a sorority get them to write you a letter of recommendation. Lexington is also a great college town because of UK athletics, Keeneland race track and the overall involvement with the college. Good luck!

Also, I'm a political science major and I work in politics. I would say that Kentucky leans more conservative, but there are more democrats (holding on to southern democrat philosophy) and with this election cycle (ky senate race) there are sure to be some national topics from KY.

This is an interesting discussion. If you are a northern person, UK will seem plenty southern for you. From anywhere in the south, not so much, but don't let it fool you. I think some of the prettiest girls in the SEC are at UK and it is as much fun as any SEC school. Football wise, it's a bit of a dissapointment, but come basketball season, if you are a fan, it will be like nothing you have ever seen. If you are considering rush, what someone else said here is true. If you are not a true southerner, you have a much better chance of being in a top tier house at UK than say Bama, Ole Miss, LSU, Ark. At those places, the top houses have long ago picked the pledge class and they don't include many girls outside of the south. Yankees looking for a southern experience aren't going to fit in well at Bama, Ole Miss, etc. But at UK they do just fine.

this is ridiculous. obviously you wouldn't have chosen UK if you didn't like it. it's southern enough but has enough northern people to have a both northern and southern party vibe. the parties are a ton of fun and greek life makes it so much better. you'll never get bored with all the frat parties, date parties, and philanthropy events going on. a ton of changes are also coming to UK this upcoming year because it's going to be a wet campus. UK is a great college experience and the past two years have been the best of my life. if you aren't having fun at UK YOU aren't putting yourself out there. college is what you make it.
