top tier frats
by: bmooDoes it really matter what tier I join, will I have less fun or get fewer opportunities in a bottom tier chapter?

There is a fraternity for everyone. Find what you think you like. If you don't know anyone in that fraternity, just ask someone when you see them on campus wearing their letters. Don't be afraid to tell them you are interested. Most of the fraternities will be willing to help you out. MOST will help, there may be a few a-holes that won't.

GreekRank ranks fraternities SOCIALLY. There’s many more facets to Greek life that you’ll see when/if you sign a bid. If you plan on rushing/joining for the primary reason of mixing with the hottest sororities then yes, not getting into top tier will make your experience less enjoyable.
But things like brotherhood, academics, philanthropy, community service, and networking are not really perfectly correlated with social standing, and a middle or bottom tier fraternity can absolutely provide you with those things as well as a top tier could. It just depends on why you want to be a brother.
TL;DR : lower tier really just means you’ll mix with sororities either less frequently or mix with lower tier. It really affect too much else.
