fraternity rush

I am thinking about rushing next fall.
Do you go to the frat houses on your own or do you have to get an invitation? I have heard both. If you dont get an invitation, that means you have no chance with that fraternity?
A couple guys I met went through and dropped. They applied and everything and only got about 3 or 4 invitations. They said you have to know someone to get in. I am out of state and dont have any connections to a fraternity.

Big part is using your time during rush wisely. Keep in mind that the top 3 or 4 fraternities have 4-500 kids that sign into their events throughout the week. It takes going to almost every single formal and informal (party) event they have and meeting a bunch of the guys because their bid processes are more exclusive. If you can get one guy, preferably older or involved in the chapter to take you in he will help you out. If you arent getting the vibe that they want you, dont waste your time, look into smaller chapters.
