by:

Im a freshman thinking about transferring to rutgers next semester from a school where greek life is a really big deal and very competitive, basically one of the only ways to make friends. is it like this at rutgers? how do the sororities act towards one another?

It is definitely not like this at Rutgers. Students here have a huge variety of clubs and organizations to join if you're looking for friends that share the same interest as you. Not only that but if you're dorming you're sure to make some friends on your floor along with classes.
When it comes to Fraternity/Sorority treatment towards each other you can basically expect the obvious. Some are going to like each other and some are not. If you read the comment sections for each of the active chapters you'll find a lot of people bashing each other but this is only because of the beauty of anonymity. None of these kids are actually going to say something like that in person. As a member of a fraternity I can tell you I've had nice mixers/philanthropy events with sororities and we have good relations with two other fraternities on campus. As for the others they're pretty much neutral however you'll find a lot of people saying crap about other simply because they're not in the same greek organization.
So when it comes down to it joining a fraternity or sorority is not the only way to make friends but it does help out.

if you want a good social life, you NEED to be a fraternity here. That is the only way you will be able to consistantly get into fun parties. As a transfer, I would highly reccomend joining one. Obviously you can make friends with kids in your dorm or join a club, but to truly have a good social life at Rutgers, Greek life is a must.

Well G Phi had an event last night and had over hundreds of girls lined up for recruitment. So it depends where you rush. SDT and Sigma Kappa aren't too competitive but Phi Sig Sig, G Phi, and ZTA are.

sororities are not very competitive here, generally the girls all get along, they go to each others events and fundraisers and support their causes. i suggest going out for formal recruitment and getting a taste of all of the chapters and what they have to offer you. you know which one you will want to belong to! but if you don't want to join, you will not have a problem making friends! there are so many other clubs and activities you can do on campus that you can make your friend circle as big or as small as you would like

I think by competitive she means between PNMs and getting your first choice house. Seeing as how Rutgers is a huge state university and there are only 7 NPC organizations (including Phi Mu now), I would say it's somewhat competitive.
