How essential is greek life here? Are parties closed? I like to go out, but I don't think I'd want to join a house. I'm afraid this will be too much like my old school....and W&M only gives us two weeks to make a deposit so I gotta make some moves soon

It really depends whether you're a guy a girl. If you're a guy that wants to have fun, I'd recommend either joining a fraternity or club sports team. If you're a girl it doesn't matter as much since you'd be able to get into most parties without a problem

^this person is right. for guys there are some open parties every now and then but if you want to go out more regularly on the weekends then you might want to rush or join a social club or sport. also for guys spring rush is more popular than for girls so if you are a guy then you can always test it out the first semester not being in a frat and rush in the spring. for girls, you can pretty much get into anything. But, if you want more than just parties and want to actually make friends with the guys/girls that go to them, i recommend joining greek life or having friends that are in greek life.

I was a transfer too and honestly found wm’s social scene to be very clique-y. You’re expected to join a bunch of clubs and get ~involved~ and your orgs become your social group pretty rigidly. I didn’t really find Greek life appealing at first but didn’t really felt like I belonged anywhere on campus until I did it, so I was in this weird spot where I didn’t really like it but also wished I had done it sooner. My advice would be to try out as many things as you can and try and find a place where you click. Greek life is an easy way to do that especially as a transfer
