rush 2016

by:

Did something go wrong with rush this year? People keep saying that 3 sororities had to keep recruiting more members after rush was over and normally that's not the case (only one of any). Did a lot of people not accept bids or did a lot of people drop out or what? This seems really weird, especially in a year where Gamma Phi Beta already joined.

More girls rushed than ever. So success rate high. Gamma phi had a later rush being new. That might have skewed things a little. But what does it matter if other , established houses have extended bidding? I think it's cool they can get some more girls they really want. What's the harm in that?

I know that some of the sororities who did extended bidding still reached quota during recruitment and have retained it up until now. From my understanding it has more to do with the size of their graduating class and how that will affect how many members are left during the fall semester. It also may have to do with some chapters having had members deactivate during the past semester. Regardless, it does not have to do with whether or not the chapters reached quota or did well during recruitment. Hope this helps clear up some of your confusion!

Chapters are allowed to bid to both quota and total. Quota is the number of women that they are allowed to take through formal recruitment. (Because of certain rules that promise everyone PNM who prefs somewhere a bid, some chapters get more than that. Those bids are "quota additions.") Quota is set by Panhel.

The chapters also have a number called total. Total is also set by Panhel. It is the total number of members that a chapter is allowed to have, counting all of the members in all of the classes.

A chapter can take quota, but be under total because seniors sometimes graduate early, students drop out before they graduate, or they had a bad recruitment two years ago. Whatever... After formal recruitment, the chapter is allowed to open bid PNMs until they reach total.

Example: Total is 120 and quota was 30. Chapter ABC took 33 new members (quota plus 3 quota additions) during formal recruitment. They have 85 initiated members in the chapter. When the 33 new members are added to the 85 initiated members, they have 118 people in the chapter. They can give 2 open bids to get up to total.
