sorority rush take two

by: rejected

What are the chances of getting a bid as a sophomore if I rushed and did't get one as a freshman? I've noticed a lot of sophomores I saw at rush this last year are not in greek life. I have a ton of friends who are active sorority women, but I just don't know if that's enough. Especially for the chapters where the only people who vote for you are the one's that you talk to.

No one knows your chances because no one knows you. You could be an absolute star who fell through the cracks. Or you could be someone who just isn't meant for sorority life. But here's the thing: these girls may be your friends, but they have 150+ sisters who have friends and freshmen and even just random girls they met during recruitment that they will fight for. And if you're not a fit for their chapter, you're not a fit for their chapter. The only thing you can do is go in with a ~genuinely open mind~ and do your best.

And when I say open mind I mean it. Even though you're a sophomore and think you probably know everything about the reps of all the sororities and what their sisterhoods are and who's cool and who's not and whatever, ignore all of it. You would be so lucky to receive a bid from any of these chapters especially as a sophomore.

Best of luck!

^^^^ Another consideration is to possibly do fall rush

Don't do fall rush unless AOII is your top choice (since they will probably be the only ones who will be doing it). They're full of awesome, fun, genuinely great girls who deserve people who actually want them not ones who join just so they can say they're part of Greek life and will then complain about not getting anything better. They've been doing much better in the past and fall rush is ther chance to be more selective and only pick the girls they really want and they can tell actually want them.

Were you cut or did you drop? Do you have grade problems? Are your grades better, if you had grade problems?

If you are a decent person with a decent GPA and some extracurriculars, you should consider Gamma Phi Beta's colonization. They will need sophomores.

Try formal recruitment, but if that doesn't work out, think about GPhB.

How big of a factor is GPA? Like I thought as long as it was above the cutoff it shouldn't be an issue?

It depends entirely on the chapter/sorority. There is a minimum set by Panhel, but a chapter can have a cutoff above that because of standards set by the chapter or by their National organization.

It also depends on the GPA of the other PNMs. If you just met the minimum, but not by much, and you were competing for a spot with other PNMS who had better GPAs, you could get cross-cut for grades easily. If you are close to the line, it's really easy for a chapter to cut you. Being in a sorority is a time committment. If your grades are borderline, it's probably not a good idea to go through recruitment.

Time to pledge the library.

What if you were cut from rush? Do you still have a chance as a sophomore or do they automatically think something is wrong with you?

What do chapters look for in sophomores?

i def can't tell you what other chapters look for, but what i know i've looked for in the past and other friends in like two chapters who have also taken sophomores and talked about it is stuff like this. basically if you are going through as a sophomore, you need to convince me why we should take a chance on you instead of as a freshman. if you're not a transfer, what made you go through rush as a sophomore instead of as a freshman? did you want to establish yourself and be a leader in other stuff on campus before going greek? did you need to get your grades up and did you? are you actually going to do stuff with the chapter instead of being dead weight? do you have friends in the chapte rwho can vouch for you being a cool person who can fit in? if you rushed as a freshmen and are rerushing again, why? did you drop or were you dropped? if you dropped because you thought you were too good for what you had back then who says you're more mature now?

stuff like that are going to be things that can swing it in your favor or against you. we all would prefer freshmen but at the same time one of my closest friends joined as a sophomore and we're juniors now and she just decided too late to rush as a freshman and it was our loss for not knowing her sooner. everyone is different and obviously this won't be the same for every chapter but i'm trying to be as general as possible.
