dg & diversity

by:

As a woman of color I made it a point each day (up to sisterhood) to ask DG’s about how their chapter regards issues of diversity & inclusion and supports its sisters of marginalized identities. Each time, I was incredibly disappointed by the response I received. The issue was paid lip service and no one could discuss it substantively. Please do better!

Can you elaborate on what other chapters did or said that you found much better?

While Greek Life is not necessarily the most diverse, every chapter works hard to support their sisters of all different backgrounds and lifestyles. I'm sure everyone would love to hear what kind of answer you were looking for and use it as a barometer to judge themselves by.

Yes, please tell us what you’d like to see. I’m not in DG but I’m sure other chapters struggle with this, and I’d love to know how to improve in the future!

Thank you! I honestly don’t think I would be able to have those conversations myself, especially during a crazy time like recruitment. We all need to do better, and I hope that the DGs you happened to speak to do not represent an overall attitude and education in their chapter or our Greek community.

i'm so sorry you had that experience girl! i don't know if it helps but i had a pretty different experience at dg. it wasn't something i made a deliberate point to bring up but as a woc who cares about these issues i didn't shy away from it and neither did the 3-4 actives i talked to about it. my guess is dg like probably most chapters has some members who are there and some who just aren't yet. agree it's definitely something that could be more of a priority to greek life across the board

We all have to do better. Period.

But I honestly have a hard time believing that every woman in every chapter can eloquently speak on every subject. It’s a standard we should hold ourselves to but if we want to be real it’s just not happening.

We should change that, absolutely. But I know women in every chapter, DG included, who can intelligently speak about every subject described (and I know there are WOC in DG as well, who I’m sure are upset you had that experience with their sisters). I’m sorry you had this experience and hope all of us take it as something to learn from.

As a woman of color, one of the sororities i went to on sisterhood, the president who was korean american herself went up at the beginning and said candidly how she felt like greek life wasnt going to be her place but that she felt very supported and her speech didnt seem scripted it was very very raw and real and before any of the day and it set the tone of day off to a great note. I think it showed that as a woman of color u can be in a sorority and be the literal president which was actually something that made me feel like i could be more supported.
