surprised by how many girls weren’t invited back

by:

Anyone know how to start another sorority chapter? If more people are interested in Greek life than there are spaces for people to get involved, shouldn’t another chapter be started?

Are they being dropped from all chapters or dropping out because they don't like their choices? Because there's a BIG difference.

Also GPhi just started a few years ago, and before then KD and before then AOPi in just the last like 10 years or so.

Yeah it looks like a surprising number of people were dropped completely and I think that's really sad. It will be interesting to see if all the chapters made quota / if quota was pretty similar to usual or if chapters were just overzealous with dropping girls.

It is disappointing to see how many girls have seemed to have been dropped this year specifically sophomore PNMs as well. If anyone could elaborate on reasoning behind the dropping process or sophomores rushing in Greek life that would be helpful

It’s not that the sororities are dropping more people it all depends on Panhell. They give each sorority a number of pnms that can be invited back each day

but I thought their algorithm was supposed to make sure that as many people can participate in Greek life as possible. So why were some people invited back to so many sororities while others couldn’t get an invite to even one? Seems flawed

Yeah it seems like the algorithm is hurting both PNMs and sororities. Maybe someone else who knows more about the math has a different take though.

the algorithm is designed to maximize opportunities for each individual pnm and chapter; it does not intentionally redistribute opportunities between pnms to maximize total participation. so ultimately if you aren’t high enough on a chapter’s list to get an invite “spot” before they’re all filled, you’re dropped by that chapter. whereas someone who is high on several lists will take as many spots as they can in order of their own preference up to the max parties allowed for that day. any spots they turn down become open again for the next person on the list. where people fall through the cracks is when less desired chapters fill early spots with a large # of pnms who ultimately choose other sororities, which means those spots are “wasted” and those sororities may not make quota. of course, there’s no way to judge in advance whether that’s happening, so it can’t really be avoided though it’s mitigated by having those chapters offer a higher number of invites

I think flaws in the system also happen in reverse, where a PNM who is liked enough by her top choices to get invited back initially but not to be invited to later rounds/receive a bid, and doesn't accept invites to chapters she likes less because she's already filled her schedule, can end up getting dropped. This to me is the more disappointing outcome, because the PNM ends up getting boxed out from a chapter that would have been happy to have her and that she would have preferred to having no bid at all
