preference day outfit

For preference day, the recruitment guide says to wear something formal... I'm wondering how formal I should dress. In my mind, formal means prom, but I doubt this is what they mean. Should I wear something like I would wear for a case comp? pls help

Think semi fancy dresses (not full length gown) from places like lulus! Like something you might wear to a dance in high school. Don’t wear what you wore to case comp because that probably looks more like business attire.
