frats

Incoming freshman contemplating (but not overly sold) on greek life. What are the different frats like here? I'm just looking for a general description of each so I can get a feel for them based on my personality.

Hey I'm another incoming freshman and I've heard the way to look at frats on campus is to look at the most recent pledge class. What are the general descriptions for the newest pledge classes?

Meeting the brothers is the best way, no doubt about it. Save your impressions on the fraternities until then

descriptions of PCs usually come pretty biased based on who the describer generally affiliates with. you also can't really rank pledge classes because of all the different criteria. but the chapters' PCs that were remarkable this year (in that people were really talking about them) were AEPi, SigNu, and SAE. that doesn't necessarily mean they're the "best"; it just means they attracted a lot of positive attention.

An honest assessment:

Top tier: Sigma Chi, Phi delt, Sig Ep (wait what?)

Middle: Beta, AePi, Sig Nu

Bottom: Sae, KSig, Tke

But even the bottom ones have great guys, and even the top ones have their scoobs. There isn't a huge difference in quality compared to most schools

Honestly, you should visit each house with an open mind. Each house is unique and different with a diverse group of guys. If you're thinking about joining for the right reasons (brotherhood, lifelong friendships, etc.), you should choose the house that you see yourself fitting in the best. Also, I'm sure you know this - WashU has deferred recruitment for fraternities. So spend time in the fall getting to know each house before you rush in the spring.

This is one of the few solid responses to this question

Real Tiers: Top: AEPi and Sig chi, Upper Middle: Phi Delt and SAE, Lower Middle: Kappa Sig and Sig Nu, Low: Beta and ZBT, Lowest: Theta Xi and TKE. Sig Ep was sick before getting kicked off campus, now they are pretty irrelevant, got a tiny pledge class last spring.

heres an objective view on each of the houses:
AEPi: great group of guys, good pledge class from last year though some brothers are a bit full of themselves.
Beta: known as the "nice guys" on campus. Took in an ENORMOUS spring pledge class, doesn't hold many parities.
KapSig: has taken smaller pledge classes recently, but a close knit group of guys who like to smoke.
Phi Delt: basically all varsity athletes. cool guys, but basically the athlete fraternity on campus.
SAE: maybe the most diverse house on campus. Still kinda building up new rep on campus from incident in the spring. lot of lax players in house.
Sig Chi: the douchiest fraternity on campus. some guys are great dudes individually, but as a whole they doesn't form a great brotherhood IMO.
Sig Nu: hold some big parties during the year and there are some great guys in that chapter. pretty active also outside of greek life.
TKE: Kind of the nerdy engineering guys on campus in general.
Theta Xi: has been getting better each year, as they've been taking great pledge classes. Dudes are real fun to chill with.
ZBT: guys are super chill and while off-campus can be inconvenient, they make it up with great parties.

The best thing you can do is go out to rush for as many fraternitites as possible. Free food, events, etc. plus you meet some great guys.

Sig Nu - Pretty chill guys, they throw down nearly every week. Well-rounded.

Sig Chi - Typical douchey frat guys when they are in a group but otherwise they are ok.

Theta Xi - Probably the tightest brotherhood on campus. Cool guys, pretty genuine.

Phi Delt - Only if your an athlete.

Kap Sig - Literally the definition of chill. Have a ganja related reputation.

SAE - Another pretty tight brotherhood. Good mix of guys, lot like Sig Nu.

Beta - Smart kids, the guys I know in it call it an Honor Society since their chapter GPA is super high. Lots of potential connections.

AEPi - Less douchey version of Sig Chi if you ask me, but more preppy in the East-Coast kind of way.

TKE - Engineering frat, the guys are probably nice but are kinda antisocial
