2.75 too bad for formal sorority rush?

by:

Hey there! So I've been looking a lot into it and I know that even though there is no formal gpa cut off for formal recruitment, I do know each house has their own predetermined cut off. I am pretty sure the general cut off is around a 3.0. So my question is, do I have a very slim chance to get a bid from a decent house with a 2.75? Please just be honest. I feel like I won't have fun at WSU as a non greek.

If your answer is, yes, your chances are bad, what about spring informal rush? Do any of the top houses have new pledges come in in the spring semester, or is that mainly something bottom tier houses do?
And, if your answer I yes, spring rush is definitely a good choice, is it the same? Like would I be welcomed by all the girls and make bonds with my pledge class the same even though I wasn't there for the first half of the year?
Lastly, if you think that's a bad idea, what about rushing as a sophomore? Is that weird or completely acceptable? If you took the time to read this, thanks so much!

Each house is different for grades so it really depends. I believe my house drops everyone with below a 2.8. I do know several girls who had low grades and didn't like the houses that kept them so they dropped out of recruitment and either did informal or went through formal recruitment again as a sophomore once they got their grades up.

I personally don't know if I would hold out for informal recruitment because it's impossible to know in advance which houses are doing it?it all depends on how many girls go through formal and how many each house gets. You might not even have to wait until spring to do informal; I know a lot of houses that aren't full still recruit year-round. That could be something to consider...usually your GPA isn't as big of a deal when you do informal (they get to know you more on an individual, personal level). And of course you would be completely welcomed if you weren't there for the first year! My house had several girls join informally and also as sophomores and they have fit in just fine.

That being said, it is completely up to you if you want to do formal. 2.75 is low for a high school GPA and realistically a lot of houses would drop you, but there is no guarantee which houses (if any) would be doing informal later. I would highly recommend going to the WSU Greek website and emailing individual chapters' recruitment chairs, and they might be able to give you more info about what GPAs they will consider. :)

What you could do is go through formal recruitment at the beginning of the year and see which houses hold on to you through out it. If there is not a preferable house in your listing by the end of the week, then I would suggest dropping out before bid day. Then you could work the entire semester to reach a good grade level so that you can possibly do informal if you like. I had recently did informal and enjoyed the better connections you get when actually having real conversations with the girls. The amount of houses doing informal varies on what happens through out the semester. Sometimes incidents happen and they for some reason suddenly have room for more sisters. And honestly, being a "non-greek" for a semester is not that bad at all. You'll meet tons of people in the dorms and on greek row anyway. There is more than meets the eye to Pullman! Hope this helps:)

Wow thanks so much for the responses. Im surprised I got answers so quicky!
This definitely helps a lot. No one really addressed the whole rushing as a sophomore thing, but other than that thanks so much. :) more answers are very welcome, I love anything that helps me picture my future at WSU!

To be honest with you, maybe you should focus on school and limit the activities. Good groups won't work with you no matter the time of year. The lower tier groups are more likely to be interested, no matter the time of year. So, go through formal and find out really quick if you make the cut for the lower tier groups. Don't take it personally that you get dropped from the top groups. It's a numbers thing and doesn't reflect upon you as a person. But, if you get dropped really fast from everyone, then you know you have bigger problems than your grades. Also, if you find you kinda like or vibe with the ones that keep you around, then you won't waste all that time laying out of the process for informal recruitment. Sorry to be so honest, but I think you already had a sense of how it is. No matter what you do, get cracking on those grades. You are here to get an education, right?
