how rush works

by:

ok pnms, here is the way rush works: Each house is given a certain number of people to invite back each round. After open house, some houses invite back 400 girls and others invite back 700... and it gets lower and lower each round. SO if you get dropped from a house it might not mean they don't like you, they just had to make drastic cuts and didn't get enough time to know you and see whether you would be a good fit. so don't get discouraged. the process works for many but not for all (or even close).

If the sororities are looking for around 40 girls, how many bids do they give out to achieve that number?

They give out the exact amount - each PNM only receives at most one bid. If you go through preference and visit 3 houses and put down all 3 houses, you will get one of those 3. If you attend 3 houses and only put down 2 or 1 on your final preference, then you aren't guaranteed a bid at all. The same works for visiting 2 houses (if you put down 1 you won't necessarily get it, but if you put down both you'll get one or the other).

That's what the computer program is there for... Its all a numbers game. That's why houses are given specific numbers they have to invite back to each round... its really complicated and not worth getting into so just know that it's hard for the houses to take a group of 850 or so girls and find 40ish in a week. So don't take it personally.
