Hello, should I allow my son to join a fraternity?

by: Cindy

Hello everyone,

I've been taking care of my son my whole life, wishing the very best for him. He was home schooled from K-12 and with the help of The Princeton SAT Review and a private tutor, we have achieved the goal of getting into the University of Washington. It is a great step in our journey. I want my son to do very well at the University of Washington. I have already created a degree plan with one backup option in case we need it. I also want him to succeed socially because I know how important connections are in the workplace. I just don't know about the whole fraternity-Brotherhood environment. I've seen some movies that depict it as a little wild or out of control. I know it's probably fiction and you kids aren't probably drinking or anything inappropriate like that. Can anyone help inform me the pros and cons of allowing my son to join a fraternity?
Kind regards,
Cindy

First off, give your kid some space to learn and figure things out for himself. From what you wrote it seems you have been helicoptering him his whole life and he isn’t going to flourish in normal societies if you are the one making the big decisions in his life such as choosing his major and even going as far to say “we” have gotten him into the University of Washington. Regarding fraternities there are many options for many different people. There are ones that drink and party many times per week and there are others more focused on academics. There are also dry frats like Theta Xi and Phi Delts who are essentially dry houses. There are many options for your kid but this should ultimately be his decision because if he joins a house you don’t like, you’re stuck there. Hope this helps, and I hope you take your son of a leash :)
