stop using the term “geeds”

by: Why?

Honestly seeing posts about “geeds” trying to sneak into parties is so disheartening. Maybe houses should open up more to people who want to rush and see what the Greek life is about, rather than them waiting in line only to be sent out because their “not in a house” or “not on the guest list.” Seriously some people need to grow up.

If you aren’t in the Greek community you won’t be let into parties. This is mostly for safety and security reasons. Boys in the fraternities LIVE in those houses, so they let people they know and can trust in. Would you want hundreds of random, drunk people going through your home and messing with your things? Especially when you have zero idea who they are? People within the Greek system know each other, so we are able to hold each other accountable. Especially if there are safety issues, we know who to contact, where everyone lives to walk them home, etc. If you really want to party, there are house parties. Or wait until you’re old enough to go to bars. Frat parties are for Greeks, we all pay dues, follow certain rules, communicate with each other, and everything else. It seems really exclusive because it is, and that’s the way it is at every college. Also, if you want a taste of Greek life, fraternities do have rush events and sororities have formal fall recruitment, continuous open bidding, and TONS of other events so you can “see what it’s all about.”

Look, nothing against geeds, but we don’t throw parties for you. The mentality of “I want to party, so I am going to go to this frat that I don’t know anybody in” is ridiculous. Throw a party in your apartment.

If you want to go to a fraternity, make friends I’m your classes, and they might invite you over.

If you want to “learn what the Greek system is about”, there is a process for that. It’s called rushing or COB’ing. Not showing up during halloweek uninvited to someone’s house and sneaking in

Just stop. If you want to party maybe consider throwing a party in your dorm/apartment. When geeds show up to parties, the host house is liable for them, which is the main reason why nobody likes random geeds wandering around the house. Either join a house and pay dues like the rest of us, or stay away from Greek parties for the safety of yourself, the actual members, and the Greek system as a whole.
