why do rankings even matter?

I'm just wondering... who actually cares about the rankings other than the "top" houses. I know they care about the fact that they're "top" but other than that why does it matter? If you're chill, I'll hang with you. None of this makes any sense on why people divide themselves based on what house they're in. Why can't they just be one big community? Someone please explain it.
