legacy
by: pnmSo I know everyone always says that being a legacy doesn't really matter. so I'm asking on here for a truthful answer because I feel like being a legacy is something that should matter. So anyways, does being a legacy for a certain sorority mean anything at all. Will it increase my chances of getting a bid for the sorority I want in the slightest way possible. I went to pan preview and the sorority I am a legacy for was my favorite house I went to! just looking for an honest answer so sorry for the long post.

As long as you have good grades it should mean your chances are pretty high. But just to clarify legacy for UT only means your mom or grandma, and aunt doesn't not count anymore for us. But keep your mind open. It's hard to get a feel for a house just after pan preview.

Some houses (especially sororities with a lot of strong southern chapters) have SO many legacies come through they could fill an entire pledge class and then some. For this reason legacies get dropped. If you have stellar grades, a good reputation, and you make solid connections in the house, you should be fine- as long as there aren't 55 or so other legacies that did the same. Also, make sure the woman who you are a legacy too is in good standing- many who think they are legacies come to find out their aunts/cousins don't count or that their mother/sister/grandmother resigned or for some other reason left the sorority in bad standing. Not saying this is the case with you, but it happens....a LOT. So do a double check, Rush every sorority, and you'll end up where you're supposed to be.

You can let the legacy house know that you are a legacy. But don't mention it or list it on your application or rec to non legacy houses. That way all your bases are covered. If a house wants you anyway it is an added plus if you are also a legacy. But if they don't want you it doesn't matter if you are a legacy or not.

My roommate (all As, great resume, pretty) got dropped by all other houses night 2 and was told after that it was because she was a legacy to a good house. They were sure that house would want her, because of her grades...and just assumed she would want that house so they didn't want to potentially waste a space. Well that house dropped her too as they had 80 legacies going through and several had friends in there and she did not. So, because she was a legacy, she ended up with nothing. Plus i'd want your favorite house to want you for you, not because a relative was a member. Since it's not a huge advantage anyway, and a potential disadvantage, don't put it at all.
