letters of rec

by:

I know there was a post below mine that was super negative so I just figured I'd throw this question out there for already greek girls especially those that hold positions in their sorority. I know some sororities require letters of rec but for those that don't and even those that do, how important are they? And do they seriously get taken into consideration if you have good ones?

There's maybe two that actually really take those into account. I had three letters of rec for a house and I'm a pretty likeable girl and got dropped from them after the first round

Not at all. My mom thought the were really important, since they were bavk in her day, and got a lot of her freinds to write really good ones. I had multiple good ones for the ones i really wanted, plus was ranked in the top 1 percent at a huge school with lots of activities, honors, service...all stuff that use to matter too, and got dropped by all the top ones and pledged a 'mid tier' one that I had not one single rec for! The good thing is I love the sorority i'm in, but it kind of breaks my heart at all the thought and time that went into letters no one cared about. It like you need a rec just so they can check that box maybe but that's it!

It's great that you sent in recs but too bad you only sent recs to the houses you wanted to be in. That's the biggest mistake pnms make is not sending recs to all the houses. Houses don't have time to get recs for Pnms that don't have one so they stick with the PNMs that do. But if a house really really really likes you they might go out of their way to get a rec for you if that's what their national requires. But that is the rare exception not the rule and you won't even know it if they did that for you. So your mom was right, recs do matter and are required by most Houses. It is stated on the Pan site which houses require and which houses don't require recs. You were lucky you received a bid to a house that you didn't care enough about to get a rec for. Maybe your house doesnt require a rec but if they do at least they cared enough about you to get one.

If the house says it requires a rec, then get it. Rush is competitive. Why put yourself at risk for getting dropped? The more desired houses can or will drop for grades and/or recs after the first night.

But i didn't do recs for any (decided to rush last minute) and got in one of the best ones that supposedly required one so idk? I am considered attractive and was top 5 in Miss Tn Teen so maybe that helped?

Because most all of us aren't as special as you the BEST advice for the rest of us is to make an effort and prepare for recruitment like you would in interviewing for a career/job you really wanted. Have a completed resume and rec for all the houses. Recs are also a great way to let houses know who you are and that you are interested in them. Put your best foot forward during recruitment. Be social and friendly, ask intelligent questions just like you would when interviewing for a job ( but have more fun because it is more fun) AND be open to ALL 13 houses! Do this and your chances of receiving a bid to a future sisterhood is excellent. Go Pan
