attention 2016 freshman girls

by:

Before you waste time getting rec letters or perfecting that resume, there is something you need to realize about recruitment at UTK:
NONE OF THAT MATTERS. Your GPA, ACT score, hardwork, accomplishments, awards, recognition, volunteer work, and anything you did in high school DOES NOT MATTER. Nobody cares. They don't take any of that into account, despite how relevant it is.
So what does matter to the chapters?
1. LOOKS- you must be thin enough and hot enough to make frat boys wanna party with you.
2. WHO YOU KNOW- you must have AT MINIMUM 3 girls in the chapter that will make sure you don't get looked over during recruitment.
3. REPUTATION- even though you can't control what people say about you, if ONE negative thing is said about you during rush you will be cut. It doesn't matter if it's true or not.

If you do not EXCEL in one or two of these 3 categories, you will not get in a top tier. If you have may some of these, you will find a house, although it may not be the best. If you have none of these, you will get cut from the majority of the houses.

The truth sucks but this is how it is at Tennessee. Any comments that say it isn't are just wrong or have no idea what they are talking about.

good luck

We aren't ole miss and this person is so wrong.

This is scarily accurate. Esp no1. I was told flat out I didn't get in a top tier because I wasn't hot enough. I was ranked top of my class, class officer, hoco court, 4 year varsity dancer, service galore and got 'friendliest' in my class so can carry on a conversation. I was told resumes were secondary to looks and connections by many so I think OP is right.

Those 3 things sound Similar to what we were told to look for during recruitment last year. And that's coming from a 2nd year Greek

This is so true! I was a 'big fish' at a huge high school with way over a 4.0 and lots of honors and got cut from all the top ones. I am pretty, but not 'hot', knew no one in the 'good houses', and have a fine reputation. I had great rec letters and a really strong resume. I was told (after) i was from the wrong part of the state and didn't know enough people.

You got cut from "all the top ones" and "were told after....". Does that mean that you dropped out of recruitment? If so, was it solely because certain "top houses" didn't want you? If the answer is yes to both of these question, then the problem isn't the system, it's you. I am not trying to be mean, but if you would have given ALL houses a chance, I'm sure based on your qualifications listed above, you would have found a great sisterhood. Perhaps try again in the Fall with a more open mind and you'll have a better outcome.

I didn't drop and pledged, but not to one considered 'top tier' here. I got dropped by all those with way over a 4.0 (on a 4.0 scale) gpa, hoco court...and girls i met with like 3.0, no honors, no prettier...got in because they had gone to school with people in there. I do like my house but i don't think there is anything wrong with dropping and not paying big bucks if you don't get what you want. It was worth it to me, because i'm not from around here and wanted an instant group to belong to, but some people aren't so desperate for friends they'll take just any house and that's ok! People are sooo judgy!!

That's why houses have spring cob parties, they are able to replace unhappy members with happy members. Its a great system. And to poster, you seem to be the "judgy" one. You are still complaining about not getting a bid to a "top" house while girls with "lesser" credientials did. Do I think you are a troll? Yes I do. But the information in this post will help PNMs have a successful recruitment. Any PNM that enters recruitment with completed recs and resumes, who meets the GPA standards of all the houses, who is friendly and interested in the process AND is open to ALL 13 houses will have great success in finding a home. ALL houses are good. Those that think otherwise won't be happy no matter where they land. And they end up posting hate on GR. Just like poster. Go Pan

I got into the sorority of my dreams by being myself all through recruitment. I didn't know a single person in the chapter and definetley dont consider myself one of the hottest girls out there. Entering recruitment I had no idea what sororities even were.

OP isn't wrong, in a general sense. Yes, there are exceptions, but for the most part IF you don't know anyone in any house its gonna take stellar looks for a house to bother taking the time to talk to you. As much as some girls want academics and recs to matter more, all of that comes in to play after connections and looks. If you don't have connections, but you're gorgeous, you'll get noticed, and if you have a good conversation and make connections you are in. A very low GPA however could keep you out, but borderline is usually not a problem. I get the feeling some of these "I have a 4.0 or above" girls want that to matter more than looks and other attributes and really it doesn't, and honestly it shouldn't. If you meet the GPA requirement thats all you need to do. You don't get extra points for having a 4.0. Or having a stacked resume. And there's a lot to be said for the connection you made with the girls at each house. Thats what matters most.

by: U gotta b the package

Houses look for girls with top GPAs, then personality, social confidence etc.... If you have friends in houses even better but that doesn't mean they can get you in. Most all pnms are attractive so that's not a big deal. I mean come on, everyone gets their hair done, wears makeup, has great clothes so everyone looks are about the same. GPA and personality determine which house is the best fit for any PNM. All houses are good so it doesn't matter where you land. What matters is where you fit.

We drop girls with no recs.

By: ...
by: nope

This is not a reason to drop someone. It is up to the sorority to get the rec, not the PNM, as per national pan rules. Some girls don't know to get recs even though a lot of PNM's provide them as a courtesy and to get on the radar. A chapter will miss some great girls by dropping them just for no rec. If a PNM is a good candidate then a rec can happen pretty quickly through the alumnae network.

i agree there are a lot of gorgeous girls but no most all pnms are not attractive and have good hair and make up. It isn't a given. I know ya'll want everyone to think you aren't shallow enough to put so much emphasis on looks and it sounds great to say GPA is the most important thing but for a lot of chapters looks are equally important. The reality is looks, grades, personality and connections are all important. there is no MOST IMPORTANT quality. As pointed out by someone in the above comment having a 4.0 doesn't move you to the top of the list. What matters is how you rank in the remaining categories as well.

By: sorry but...
by: ^^^^^^^^

So what are you saying? There are 13 houses at UTK. EVERYONE can find a home. You go where you fit. Even "unattractive" girls receive bids because placement rates (after girls that have dropped) are super high. So your argument is wrong and weird. You seem obsessed with the houses that dropped you and are trying to figure out why. The number one reason houses drop Pnms is because they are interested in others. So what. Everyone will get placed somewhere and that's what matters. I dont get your argument either because anyone who stays in the recruitment process will receive a bid regardless of looks, GPA or resume. Even you, the self proclaimed unattractive, average gpa, average resume, GR pan hater landed somewhere.

Why is OP obsessed with "TOP" houses? There has been like 5 separate posts saying the same thing-which is if a PNM can't get in a top house then she needs to rethink being greek at all. There is NO active greek on UTs campus that feels that way, none. Greek life on UTs campus is thriving and fun. ALL the houses are strong and active. Just goes to show how many anti-Greeks there are and how they love to post most all the hate on GR. How happy it makes them feel in attacking organizations they are not a part. To bad y'all didn't join. Obviously you don't know what you're missing. Go Pan

By: Nonsense
by: Not true

It's Greeks themselves that post here obsessed with ranks. Why would non Greeks care or even know about ranks unless Greeks told them. I'm Greek. I go to UT. I did not get a top house and it's OTHER Greeks who try to 'one up' and make me feel bad about my choice. My non Greek friends could care less. To act like it's only here that people care and in 'real life' it's all 'pan love and lollipops' is TOTAL BS!!!!

I agree. And you can be greek and be anti greek at the same time which is where most the negative post are coming from. Anti Greeks can be anyone who is pissed or unhappy with what happened to them during recruitment. aka...girls who dropped, who were dropped, dropped by their fav houses, didn't get the house they wanted, didn't get the process, didn't get recs, basically were clueless. Do you think someone who is happy in their house would post mean stuff. Mean post are always posted by whiners that want to hurt others because they have been hurt. To bash the greek system when one is greek, is being anti greek

That the main people who care, one up, and rank Greek houses are Greeks themselves. No one else cares.
