Before you waste time getting rec letters or perfecting that resume, there is something you need to realize about recruitment at UTK:
NONE OF THAT MATTERS. Your GPA, ACT score, hardwork, accomplishments, awards, recognition, volunteer work, and anything you did in high school DOES NOT MATTER. Nobody cares. They don't take any of that into account, despite how relevant it is.
So what does matter to the chapters?
1. LOOKS- you must be thin enough and hot enough to make frat boys wanna party with you.
2. WHO YOU KNOW- you must have AT MINIMUM 3 girls in the chapter that will make sure you don't get looked over during recruitment.
3. REPUTATION- even though you can't control what people say about you, if ONE negative thing is said about you during rush you will be cut. It doesn't matter if it's true or not.
If you do not EXCEL in one or two of these 3 categories, you will not get in a top tier. If you have may some of these, you will find a house, although it may not be the best. If you have none of these, you will get cut from the majority of the houses.
The truth sucks but this is how it is at Tennessee. Any comments that say it isn't are just wrong or have no idea what they are talking about.
good luck

This is so true! I was a 'big fish' at a huge high school with way over a 4.0 and lots of honors and got cut from all the top ones. I am pretty, but not 'hot', knew no one in the 'good houses', and have a fine reputation. I had great rec letters and a really strong resume. I was told (after) i was from the wrong part of the state and didn't know enough people.

OP isn't wrong, in a general sense. Yes, there are exceptions, but for the most part IF you don't know anyone in any house its gonna take stellar looks for a house to bother taking the time to talk to you. As much as some girls want academics and recs to matter more, all of that comes in to play after connections and looks. If you don't have connections, but you're gorgeous, you'll get noticed, and if you have a good conversation and make connections you are in. A very low GPA however could keep you out, but borderline is usually not a problem. I get the feeling some of these "I have a 4.0 or above" girls want that to matter more than looks and other attributes and really it doesn't, and honestly it shouldn't. If you meet the GPA requirement thats all you need to do. You don't get extra points for having a 4.0. Or having a stacked resume. And there's a lot to be said for the connection you made with the girls at each house. Thats what matters most.

i agree there are a lot of gorgeous girls but no most all pnms are not attractive and have good hair and make up. It isn't a given. I know ya'll want everyone to think you aren't shallow enough to put so much emphasis on looks and it sounds great to say GPA is the most important thing but for a lot of chapters looks are equally important. The reality is looks, grades, personality and connections are all important. there is no MOST IMPORTANT quality. As pointed out by someone in the above comment having a 4.0 doesn't move you to the top of the list. What matters is how you rank in the remaining categories as well.

Why is OP obsessed with "TOP" houses? There has been like 5 separate posts saying the same thing-which is if a PNM can't get in a top house then she needs to rethink being greek at all. There is NO active greek on UTs campus that feels that way, none. Greek life on UTs campus is thriving and fun. ALL the houses are strong and active. Just goes to show how many anti-Greeks there are and how they love to post most all the hate on GR. How happy it makes them feel in attacking organizations they are not a part. To bad y'all didn't join. Obviously you don't know what you're missing. Go Pan

This is scarily accurate. Esp no1. I was told flat out I didn't get in a top tier because I wasn't hot enough. I was ranked top of my class, class officer, hoco court, 4 year varsity dancer, service galore and got 'friendliest' in my class so can carry on a conversation. I was told resumes were secondary to looks and connections by many so I think OP is right.
