snap bids vs. cob vs. spring recruitment

by: Need to know

I see a LOT of misinformation about the definition of "Snap Bids" vs. "Continuous Open Bidding" vs. "Spring Recruitment." Many confuse the three. So just so everyone understands the lingo, see definitions below:

Snap Bids are given by a chapter within 24 hours of BID DAY. There is a VERY SMALL window for a "snap bid" to be extended. Chapters are only able to snap bid to quota, so generally the term is associated with negativity because only a chapter who doesn't make quota will be able to snap. It can be a great opportunity, though, for girls who drop during recruitment and maybe change their minds, or a second chance for girls who may be dropped entirely that week. Very few snaps given.

I see many comments confusing snap bidding with "Continuous Open Bidding," or COB. Chapters can use COB to extend bids to women throughout the year if their chapter is under total, the number set by Panhellenic determining chapter size. A Chapter will fall under total for various reasons: girls transferring, dropping, leaving school entirely, etc... COB provides a chapter the opportunity to extend bids to girls who may have transferred to UT and/or not gone through recruitment in a traditional way. Again, many associate negativity with this, because chapters that are healthy rarely lose members. It happens, though...and COB gives the chapter an opportunity to grow.

Spring Recruitment is just an informal Panhellenic-organized recruitment, again for chapters who are below total.

Make sense?
