Go Greek or Go Home??

Will I still have a decent social life freshman year if I'm not in a sorority this year? Deciding whether to drop and rush sophomore year.

Sororities are a great way to be introduced to other students and to be involved in campus activities, but you will meet people in other things you do. I made good friends in my dorm freshman year. If you are not involved in any clubs freshman year then you may struggle to meet people generally. Something to consider about rushing as a sophomore is think about if it will bother you to be a year older than majority of your pledge class. I had a friend who rushed as a sophomore and she said she did feel a little of a disconnect. But I know others who did not feel that. COB is what is happening right now, so the rush style is very relaxed. I think going to some events is worth a shot just to see how you feel.

I don't think I can do COB because I got a bid from another sorority In formal recruitment.

Oh so you are a new member in a chapter right now. My advice then would be to see how you feel during the new member process, and if you are unhappy when it comes to being initiated, then you can leave. Please understand that every new member feels out of sync or out of place at first when they join a chapter. I highly suggest giving it a chance for a few weeks to see if you feel better. You get out of a sorority what you put in.

I will give it a little time. I just don't want to get stuck. This group doesn't seem as involved and enthusiastic as others. But I'm worried that if I drop (even after giving it time) I won't have access to social events or have a hard time getting in a sorority as a sophomore.

If you just accepted a bid you haven't experienced a thing yet and don't know what you don't know. Since you're committed for a year you can at least try up to initiation and then reassess before going through with it. Dropping now would serve no purpose.

There is an engagement fair on ped walkway soon. All sorts of clubs on campus will be there. You can join clubs as well as be in a sorority so you will be able to meet all sorts of people.

And you know a good way to find out and get involved in other campus orgs? Yep, your sorority sisters! If they aren't in one you're interested in, they know someone who is and can connect you. Sorority members are not insular, they tend to be joiners and also know people all over campus.
