Silent COB houses
by: The realI am planning on COBing in the next few weeks but my roommate just told me that a house that stated they ARE NOT COB is doing silent COB to fill a few spots? Can they do that? I asked her and she said they do it so they don’t get embarrassed about having to COB? Why is COB embarrassing for a house? I’m thinking about not doing it.

Most houses do COB every year except for a few who aren’t allowed to do it because their bilaws state that they can’t.The ‘not meeting quota’ thing is kind of true when houses give COB’s first semester right after rush, but second semester everyone is usually going to have open spots even if nobody drops because of winter grads, transfers, people leaving the school completely, etc.

If you want to COB do it! There is nothing bad about COB. The problem is some houses like to put a stigma around COB. Top houses COB all the time but do it quietly so one knows they have spots to fill. There is nothing wrong with COB. To be honest the trend right now is for girls to go through recruitment do tik toks and see which house they got and drop. It’s crap since it took a spot of someone who really wanted to rush. My house we lost 30 girls after bid day because they were sad they didn’t get a top house . So we have been calling girls to ask if they want to join for the last few months but we have been doing COB for at least 5 years.

When chapters only have a few spots, they already pretty much know who they want to offer COB to, and so it doesn't make sense to announce that they are actively looking for new members.
When insecure members of other sororities hear that another sorority is offering COB, they like to twist it into something shameful because they are that petty. But their own sorority does COB too!
Continuous Open Bidding can happen at any time after formal recruitment if a house is under Chapter Total, or if they did not take Quota during formal recruitment. Usually it's because of Chapter Total.
Every house dips below Chapter Total from time to time because, as someone else states, members graduate in December, go on study abroad or take internships, they transfer to another school, or they decide that sorority life is not for them any longer and drop out or take alumna status.
Every chapter can offer COB, and when a chapter says it's against their bylaws, what they are really saying is that they don't want to publicize that they are below Chapter Total or to hold recruitment events to fill spots because they think it will make them look less than desirable. But the truth is that these chapters absolutely do offer COB! Every chapter is guaranteed the right to offer COB without announcement or wait for other chapters to do it. It is up to each individual chapter and it is not really anything to do with an organized panhellenic COB week.

Everyone thinks houses have to fill quota because their actives drop, which can be true but Phi Mu had a lot of December graduates so now they need to fill those spots.
