WE NEED MORE CHAPTERS

by:

I’m sorry but it’s actually embarrassing that our sororities are taking over 120 girls when the houses built for us can fit less than 300 per chapter room meaning we’re forced to have chapter in the student union. We had the 3rd largest rush in the entire SEC and yet we only have have 13 chapters. UTK panhellenic is embarrassing and needs to work hard to fix it’s focus on profit and care more for the village and the pan community. We should be at 17+ chapters for the amount of women we have rushing these days. Ridiculous.

or just allow chapters to ask back only the girls on the priority bid list and not the back ups to fill “quota”

“quota” is part of the reason as well. thanks for the facts

If we’re 3rd and Bama is 1st, who is second? UArk?

Uark is second, and they only have 11 houses (although they look a lot bigger), so imagine the competitiveness there. UTK and Uark arguably the two most difficult schools to rush...

Ole Miss rush is harder than both and they only have 10 houses.

we had about 500 more girls rush than ole miss. and they have 11 chapters not 10. it’s not about being “harder” it’s about not having the resources to sustain the pledge classes pan makes us take

They are a lot bigger at UArk, the average chapter size is 550 women

Kappa Alpha Theta, Alpha Xi Delta and Alpha Gam all used to have chapters at UT. They all closed over the years.

Your numbers are not so unique compared to large state schools. Your numbers are almost identical to other schools, Ole Miss, UArk (as mentioned) and Texas (#PNM, #houses).

As for adding chapters, Tennessee has uniquely put itself in a situation that will deter most Nationals from wanting to colonize. The way the Sorority Village was built will keep many away. Their new group would be the only organization not at the Village and it will negatively impact that chapter for years, if not decades. There would have to be a commitment from the university to house that new chapter, find an alternative to the village that would not be a negative for that group and I don’t see that happening.

And in reality Ole Miss is NOT harder than UARK. You have zero chance of getting into top houses at UARK without MAJOR connections. Friend from HS just got into a top house at Ole Miss with literally zero connections and an almost identical resume as mine... Top houses supposedly had to cut 700+ before meeting a single PNM...

Uark had 2200 PNM's with 11 houses...

There is still technically a spot for every PNM who goes to preference. Every PNM who finishes recruitment and maximizes her options is guaranteed a bid - somewhere. Thus, If PNM numbers keep growing, pledge classes will keep getting larger. The SEC schools mentioned above have huge pledge classes.

The facts that the system forces top chapters to make huge cuts up front (true) and limits a good number of girls to chapters they don't particularly want (true) is just the way it works. That is truly unfortunate for girls who do not like their options, but works well for others who join chapters they might have ignored otherwise, have a great greek experience, and make those chapters stronger. 5-6 UT chapters have benefitted greatly from this system and have moved from the so called "bottom to middle" group or from "middle to top" since RFM was installed. 1-2 chapters still struggle, partly due to the bad PNM experiences described by posters above.

No matter what the school, nobody is cut because there isn't a spot anywhere- UT's recruitment and cut numbers do not work any differently from any other schools. They all follow national Panhellenic rules.

Now, the resulting issue of huge pledge classes and outgrowing the houses is a totally different problem that will be really hard to solve at UT due to the location of the village. An unequally housed colony will always struggle and that will be a hard sell for any national organization.

1) Telling girls to trust the process, isn't about them. It's about the numbers. If they want to end up in any ole sorority - then yep, trust the process. There is a spot for everyone as you mention. If they want to end up in a sorority for sisterhood, leadership and empowerment than absolutely do NOT trust the process. It's not about how much you may connect with them, if you don't make the number than you get "cut" and forced onto another house.
2) Maximizing their options? It's drilled into their head to finish pref and sign the contract to accept a bid as soon as their last party is complete. They list their 2 options in order of best and next best - or worst and more worse. If they decide NOT to accept the bid the next day, their options are done. They are not allowed to rush until next year (not COB or Spring). That is not Maximizing their options. If they finish pref and are still not connected with either house, then they need to withdraw and take their chances at either 1) COB or 2) Spring Recruitment. Not every house can/will be able to participate but it gives these girls more of an option to form a connection and truly see what these groups are about.
Don't get me wrong, there are truly girls out there that will (and do) throw a fit when they are cut from their "pick" - but do those girls really embody what the sisterhoods were formed as? Probably not - and that will show in time.
For all girls participating for the right reason, the process does not work.

if you were “rushing for the right reasons” you would focus on the houses that actually want you and not the ones that didn’t invite you back. They don’t want you, either try again next year or accept it

To the idiot that said "accept it" you sound like a typical Regina George.

Sororities are expensive. So let's stop with the "mutual matching" marketing bull and say what it is really about. Making money for the top of the organizations so they can continue to look great on Instagram.

The whole system needs to be flushed down the toilet. "Oh we love our philanthropy!". The girls spend more on Starbucks every year than it does on raising money.
