RIP Sig Ep

by:

Last week they pled guilty and took a plea bargain to get a shortened suspension. Earliest they can petition to return is 2023.

When will nationals realize they can no longer advertise themselves as a social fraternity? Either revert changes or quit acting like something they’re not. Kids don’t go to an SEC school and join a social fraternity to do the balanced man program and have dry housing. They’re delusional. 😭🤣

Over the last year, after a number of years of witnessing increasingly risky behavior and adamant refusals by the undergrads to change their ways, the Sigma Phi Epsilon national fraternity, with the consent of the TN Alpha Alumni and Volunteer Corporation (AVC) Board, decided to appoint an Alumni Advisory Committee (AAC) to oversee the operations of our chapter and conduct a membership review of the members. A membership review is a process by which a group of alumni interview the current brothers and attempt to identify those who have the desire to be a part of a chapter that would aspire to the ideals of Sigma Phi Epsilon. Those that don’t wish to go through the process or are rejected are free to immediately join a fraternity that might be more appropriate to the experience that they seek. SigEp HQ would have liked nothing more than to have avoided this membership review – in the end it is an action of last resort, taken only when all other efforts to guide the chapter in improving its operations over several years had failed. On the surface, the chapter has seemed strong over the last decade, with an 10-year average of 100+ members and a good GPA. However there are numerous underlying problems that imperiled the future of SigEp at the University of Tennessee, so the National staff took action in partnership with campus professionals.

Based on what I’ve heard and read: zero pledging, “tiered” membership, this Balanced Man program that requires you to download an app that tracks your daily activities, dry houses, push to bid anybody with a pulse just to boost numbers. How can they possibly expect to operate like this and survive at UT?

SigEp's leadership in adopting requirements for substance free chapter housing has greatly improved the chapter experience. The purpose of a SigEp chapter is to find men who share our Fraternity’s principles and to develop them into a Balanced Man® who will be the next generation of values-based leaders. Drinking really plays no role in that mission, and frankly, data from higher education researchers (GreekLifeEdu and AlcoholEdu for College® to name a few) shows that it actively works against a chapter’s ability to do so. SigEp chapters have that have actually implemented substance-free facility policies are thriving on campuses across the country.

The Alumni Advisory Committee (AAC) has addressed the chapter body and provided the ultimatum that TN Alpha is going to provide the proper SigEp experience through full implementation of the Balanced Man Program and those not on board should leave on their own or they will be removed.

It is inconceivable to me why anybody would want to join SigEp the way its nationals currently operate. This is sad because SigEp has such a well known name and history.

I’ve known a few friends and family members who joined SigEp at other colleges, and most of them have complained about all of these things and several have dropped as a result. In fact, the only person I know who enjoyed his time in SigEp (at another school) openly admitted that he loved it because it was "different" and not like other fraternities (specifically no pledging). And he's a great dude, just not a traditional fraternity kinda guy. But how can you advertise yourself as a social fraternity when you literally aren't allowed to any of the things that are the bread and butter of what being in Greek life is all about.

The definition of "hazing" has become so beat up and manipulated to the common definition I hear of it being forced to do something you do not want to do.

I am not particularly fond of the Balance Man Program and do not want to do a majority of the things I'm required to do without being sent to standards and maybe being expelled... Does that count as hazing for every semester of my college experience?

Rushees accept bids without really thinking about various Nationals politics and policies because for the most part Nationals are not relevant.

Until they swoop in and gut you.

Don't blame the brothers for not knowing when they took their bids just how much their nationals sucks

SigEp’s nationals are a joke and actively ruining the fraternity experience. Should honestly advertise itself as a professional fraternity, not a traditional social one. Puts such a bad rep on the maybe 20 actually good chapters... well, 19 with us basically gone now

You're acting really immature. It's not "false advertising." It's right there for everyone to read in the strategic plan:

SigEp Strategic Plan

Every SigEp member understands and is so excited by the life-changing opportunities afforded through the BMP that they remain in the chapter through graduation and give back as a volunteer and donor.

100% of chapters use the BMP App to organize and track participation in member development programming

Launch monthly BMP and BMP App report card and newsletter

Members sign membership agreements each semester

100% of chapters offer members four challenges and enforce lapsing

100% of chapters have an active standards board enforcing membership expectations and celebrating exemplary behavior.

Make all physical and mental health and wellness resources easily accessible in mySigEp and BMP App

Launch excitement campaign around the benefits and fun of BMP

Will the house be leased out to another group? Sold?

I doubt the alumni would sell it, at least for a few years. If nationals doesn't recolonize, then another frat or srat or student group might get it.

They should make a clean break and go independent of nationals. Instead of paying ridiculous amounts of money every year for headquarters' plush salaries and vacations, they could spend it on providing an excellent student experience and alumni network.

Only other option is the one they've recently been forced on to, and that's no pledging, no drinking, paying for a nanny narc to live in the house, and being tracked on their phones through the Balanced Men program
