If you are a legacy for a certain sorority, do you have to reach out to the sorority somehow to let them know?

It's a good idea to do this. Your legacy connection should do it, not you. Some sororities even have a form for this which would be on their national site.

No! Don't contact the local chapter! Instead, contact the person in your family and have them fill out a recommendation form for you (available somewhere on each NPC sorority's website) and send it in. If that family member is deceased like mine was (my grandmother), contact your local alumnae panhellenic to discuss getting a recommendation from them. If you live in an area that doesn't have an alumnae panhellenic council, contact the NPC sorority and tell them about your situation. Usually, they will connect you with an alumna or an alumnae chapter in the area that will meet with you and discuss giving you a recommendation. Hope this helps!

This is NOT what a LEGACY FORM is and @nin is giving confusing advice. Any alumna can write a recommendation and the above advice can help with that, but a Legacy Introduction is something different and IN ADDITION to recs. Some sororities have them and if your legacy house does then your legacy connection needs to handle it. Definitely not the same thing as getting a rec.
