is greek life dying?
by: utkgreekI don’t know if I am the only one to observe this, but it kind of seems like greek life here seems to be not as prominant as it once was. With most of the frats either being kicked off or on social, the parties aren’t as fun, boxing weekend is kind of iffy after this last run, and the national opinion on greeks seems to be not the best rn (for good or bad, I’m not saying either way), and the sorority pcs seem to be more hit-or-miss lately. I used to have so much fun in greek life, but it kind of becoming sad. Maybe that’s just me?

Greek life is definitely slowly dying at UTK. The administration is cracking down on fraternities and their events (even off campus) and trying to make them “safer.” For now, it seems like there is going to continually be a cycle of fraternities on probation and getting kicked off. Don’t think there’s a way it’s going to start to get better and eventually less and less incoming students aren’t going to be interested in it since it’s such as hassle.

Fraternal life is so much more than fun and 'surface' appearances. Living a life without hassle simply means not minding the care others impart to you through their caring guidance and support. We all live for each other, and college is a time when people with ideas different from yours express their views while knowing your thoughts may not be the same. Think of how thee homes our sororities now have, after many years without them, add so much to our campus greek tradition!

Is Greek membership down? That would tell us the level of overall interest. But, it may just be the marginal class of members who are dropping out. It may be that the future holds a smaller but more elite membership. Before Greek life can die, the activities that we joined for would have to be replaced elsewhere. And where is that? I’d consider another social organization if it had the same brotherhood and parties, but I don’t see that anything else is close. I’d accept a smaller and stronger Greek system.
