not so glamorous?

Hey, I'm a PNM and I'm legitimately wondering what the crappy parts of being in a sorority can be. I've noticed so far that it's expensive, and image is really important, seemingly more so than philanthropy or sorority-bonding type activities. Am I correct about these conclusions?

What have you noticed? Greekrank? This site is not a good representation of what sororities are all about. Sororities are full of all kinds of people. Go through recruitment and you'll see for yourself. Image is very important during recruitment because actives and pnm's are trying to impress. After that it's about sisterhood, tailgating, philanthropy and the other stuff. Don't decide anything from this crappy site.

Look at it this way: would you choose a church based upon the anonymous opinions of website trolls? Is it not smarter to ask people and neighbors within your community which church may fit your needs? Would you not then visit several churches to decide which church is your better fit? Get out there and meet the actives within each sorority, they are human like you and desire human contact regardless of whether you ever join their ranks.

I’ll admit I’m an alum- an alum who didn’t truly understand the benefits of sorority life until a sister (from a different chapter who I didn’t know) helped me get my first job when I graduated. Until that job took me 1500 miles away to a big city where a local alumnae chapter took me in and helped me get acclimated. Until i made it back to Knoxville and found myself involved with the chapter at UT again-whose members got to know me and my kids like family. Until my pledge sister from twenty years ago who lives in NYC called me last week crying after a week of profound loss because the comfort of lifelong sisters outweighs the fast paced friendships of the city by tenfold. So yes, as an advisor I check these boards every once in a while to make sure there are no online issues (most of this site is made-up drama). And that may seem a little weird, for sure. But once you experience a lifetime of caring, you’ll realize you would respond too. So whatever “crappy” parts you perceive or (have the good fortune to) go through: long nights of dance practice, pomping for Homecoming floats in the basement of a foul smelling frat house, or having extra pressure on a final because you want to get that 4.0 to help the chapter GPA....consider it a blessing.

Maybe you’ll marry that guy sitting next to you pomping into the wee hours of the morning. I did. 👍🏼
