rushing as a vet
by: Wrenis PinkleSo, I’ll be rushing next fall as a 22yr old military vet. Without disclosing too much info, I grew up in TN and I’m a legacy. Will my age be an issue when it comes to getting a bid into a top tier fraternity?

Thank you for your service. Your pledge class is the group that you will be closest to. You may find a bunch of 18 year old boys fresh out of high school a bit immature for your liking. The brothers more your age will be close to graduation. Do you think you would fit in with that situation?

Yes I actually do, I’m not saying I’m immature but I have friends now that are 18 that I get along with fine. I also had friends who were 22 when I was 18 that I looked up to. I may be annoyed by them from time to time but they would be my brothers and that’s how a family is sometimes. I was just wondering if my age and experience will be a detriment when during rush?

No, not if you remain humble during rush about your age and your experience. In your favor, you could certainly be viewed for your leadership potential, as well as your ability to legally purchase alcohol, but you would still be low man on the totem pole as a new boy. If you show you will fit in with the brotherhood and be willing to start from scratch to earn their respect through the pledge process like everyone else you should be fine. Keep an eye out during rush for whoever is currently pledging because these are the guys you will go through with. Choose based on these guys, not the older guys - advice for every rushee not just you. Good luck.

I think it might be better if you joined a club or started a club on campus for 'older' freshmen or 'vets'. Thank you for your service, much appreciated and respected but it might be weird for the younger ( 17/18 year old freshmen) which is something you need to keep in mind.

So you’re saying the freshman never have contact with seniors at the school, who are the same age as the OP?
