recruitment week and ignite conference

by:

I'll be a Freshman at UT this fall and I'm moving from Chicago. When I confirmed enrollment I signed up for the Ignite Leadership Conference from the 17th to the 20th to get involved and meet people. I'm interested in sorority recruitment but the dates overlap. Is anyone else having this problem? Advice? I'm really interested in the sisterhood but academics are super important to me. I've heard that the sororities have a negative reputation but I wanted to feel it out for myself. Don't know which one would be a better option, and I'm not from around here so I don't know anyone to ask.
Any advice would be helpful! Thanks!

I didn't do ignite but I know people who did and rushed. Just give a heads up to the ignite people and you'll be good to leave early to get ready and attend the rush events. A lot of people rush who do ignite

I don't think the sororities at UT have a negative reputation. They are what you make it. If you want to get involved in academics and clubs, they are the place for you. If you want to focus on academics, there are girls in every sorority that want that too. If you want to go to mixers and date parties, there are girls in every sorority that want to do that too. There is a lot of Pan love at UT. It gets a little catty on here, but nothing like other SEC schools.
In most, if not all, of the sororities, you are required to log so many study hours. They want their members to have high gpa's. They want you to be involved in leadership opportunities.

for sorority recruitment then talk to someone at Ignite for advice about managing the two. Your Gamma Chi will help you with it that week as well. Greek life is a great way to get involved in whatever aspect of campus life interests you. Sororities do not have a negative reputation at UT or at most places in the South - quiet the opposite, actually. Girls from all chapters at UT enjoy their own organizations and have friends in the others. This site is a poor representative of the Panhellenic community, full of negativity and bashing for whatever reason, so take what you read here with a grain of salt. Just ignore the negative comments, be open to all of our great chapters, and make your own decision when that time comes.

There are grade reports for all chapters available on the Panhellenic website if you want to compare greek women's grades to the overall student body.

Best Wishes for a great recruitment if you decide to take part!

Talk to your Gamma Chi, and you should be good to go! Plenty of girls did it last year. Ignite is a great way to get involved right off the bat (especially if you end up deciding Greek life isn't for you), and it'll give you something to talk about during recruitment! Best of luck!
