fraternity bid for sophomore
by: JanuaryvolHi All -- I'll be a transfer student in January and a first semester sophomore (a few classes aren't going to transfer). I'd like to go through spring fraternity recruitment and am wondering how hard it is for a soph transfer to get a bid. I hear it's kind of tough at some SEC schools. Also, do most UTK fraternities take part in spring recruitment? Any info would be appreciated.

Getting a bid will be no problem at all as long as you aren't a weird guy. Pretty much every fraternity does spring rush at UTK. You being a sophomore won't matter. A few of the big names that most people agree are the top fraternities here are: Sigma Chi, ATO, Pike. (in no particular order). Just depends on what you're looking for and if you fit in. Good luck.

Thanks again for all the replies. I'd wondered how things were going for Pike after all that happened. How'd their nationals handle it with the new pledges who hadn't initiated yet? Anyway, I couldn't find this on the website, but is there a GPA requirement for fraternity rush like I hear there is for sororities? Mine is fine in good standing, but took a hit this semester from a physics class I just barely made it out of. I'm sure there are requirements to initiate, but wasn't sure about rushing or pledging.

Yeah the top 5 is definitely Sigma Chi, ATO, Phi Sig, SAE, and Pike. Past that, it just depends on who you're talking to as to who's the "best fraternity." They're all very solid and you'll definitely be able to find your niche somewhere. As far as getting a bid, rush everywhere and meet as many people as possible. It really isn't that difficult to get a bid as long as you can make an impression on a few brothers who will vouch for you and tell the others that you're a cool guy. Have fun and good luck next Spring.
