sororities

The truth is, the sorority system is imperfect. But guess what? So are all the women who are part of it, and that's ok. Something I find very telling but I haven't seen mentioned on here is the fact that by senior year, almost all chapters have less than half of the girls from that original pledge class remaining by the 4th year. Several reasons: money, time management problems, & disliking being told what they can/can't post etc. My point is this: find the chapter that you will be willing to be a part of for four years. Sure, its nice to be known as an "abc" and mix with a "top" frat, but considering how fast frats are getting kicked off or suspended around here, socials are going to become a lot harder to come by. Honestly, I hate how sometimes I see someone in class and they aren't wearing their letters, then I one day notice what chapter they are in and I'm like wow, didn't picture her in that sorority. That kind of thinking is really damaging to allowing chapters to succeed and really recruit girls who could feel comfortable there. We automatically assign labels to letters and allow that to distort our views. Rush is a very superficial process that depends a lot on who puts a better show on. There really isn't a better method for it, but its also why by the end of college sororities have few seniors left; they outgrew the labels and mindset they had as freshmen. Focus on your studies and let your sorority enhance, but not define, your time at UT.

Exactly why I said almost ALL chapters have few remaining seniors and mentioned money, time, requirements and the dos and don't. "Great" chapters aren't the only ones who require a lot out of their members. Again, that's where the labeling is problematic. As girls get older, they start to see a lot of the problems in their own chapter, as well as the Greek system as a whole or notice that it loses a lot of its appeal after sophomore year. You've already met most of the friends you are gonna meet within the chapter, you've met most of the guys in the other fraternities that you care to meet (most girls don't hang out with boys 2-3 years younger), and girls have gotten involved with other organizations or have starting working or thinking about grad school. I know my chapter fines a ton and even if you're wealthy it can get annoying throwing money away. It just has started to become a burden by junior year to a lot of girls and that's where I envy frats. They are essentially about the brotherhood and don't do all the standards BS or rules and fines. Its about friendship and having fun parties to make college memorable and then doing some fun philanthropy events for good causes. My point is make sure you rush with all that in mind.

Unfortunately, unless all the houses post it on their websites there is no way to know those numbers. If you don't know all the numbers there is no way to compare whether a sorority has higher senior retention relative to other houses
