advice
by: classof2018I really want to be in alpha phi, but am nervous about rush. I know it's already too early to be stressing but I thought asking for advice before school starts could be beneficial. I know the typical go into rush open minded and you'll find your place (I do believe this), but I have my heart set on APhi. I met a lot of groups of girls when I came for my over night and they were the ones that were genuine and real to me and I want to have the type of friendships they have. This has nothing to wanting to be top house, I really do not care about that, I just want what they have. Thank you so much in advance for any help! Can't wait to meet everyone when school FINALLY starts (:

Although you may have your heart set on one sorority, you should never be dead-set on just one. That's great that you met some girls in aphi that you hit it off with but there are 6 other sororities to choose from and you may hit it off with girls from some of those as well. When going into rush, the girls who get hurt the most are the ones who only wanted to be in one particular one, and the girls who find the most luck are those who kept an open mind and kept an optimistic attitude. I'm not saying that you won't get into APhi, but you should know that if things don't work out with that sorority, you shouldn't completely give up because you may find your place somewhere else either as a non-greek or in another sorority. Also, since USD doesn't have sorority houses, you can still be friends with the girls in alpha phi even if you aren't in their sorority. Luckily, you have an entire semester before rush starts, so get to know a lot of different people, observe girls in other sororities as well as girls in alpha phi, and attend the greek "get to know us" events that are held first semester where all sororities are present and you have an opportunity to meet girls in each sorority. Once you rush, be nice to everyone, keep an open mind, and I wish you the best of luck!

Agreeing with the previous reply, it's definitely beneficial to go through rush with an open mind. Going into each sorority house, every day, hoping for the best and giving it your all is an amazing experience, and you'll surprise yourself with the friendships you'll make out of meeting girls in other chapters during rush, simply by talking to them for a short period of time. You might even find yourself loving a sorority that you weren't expecting to love. I had my heart set on Alpha Phi when I was going through rush, too, and I ended up being so torn and in love with AXO GPHI and APHI. I think that we will be able to see that you want to be with us just as badly as we want you. Be passionate, be yourself, and don't put on a front in order to make yourself 'seem' more desirable.
Also, make sure that you don't listen to anyone about stereotypes concerning any of the sororities. Greek Rank is humorous and interesting to look at, but a lot of the rankings are based on narrow experiences and interactions with only a small amount of women or men in each Greek chapter, as well as people putting others down for the sake of a trivial 'ranking.' Every single sorority has incredible, friendly, beautiful, funny, intelligent women, and choosing a sorority should be based on how well you feel you connect with and fit in with the girls there. Reputations will last only as long as they are talked about, your sisterhood will last you a lifetime.

Just remember that a few girls do not reflect an entire chapter. I went into rush confident that I would join one chapter and during rush, they quickly lost their appeal and I ended up dropping them and choosing another chapter. Get to know girls in all sororities and go in with an open mind because you really never know where you truly belong and you do not want to choose somewhere where you won't find real sisters
