fraternity movement 2016

Rising- Elmo, Zete, Phi Psi, FIJI, Delta Sig, Beta, Phi Society, Alpha Sig, Theta Chi

As a group, the fraternities above either dominated during this year’s rush or have shown consistent improvement in the past few years. As an already widely respected fraternity, I find it a little difficult to call Elmo a rising house, but I think the quality of the guys they got speaks for itself. Elmo absolutely dominated rush this year, stealing a number of The Hall’s top prospects. Zete showed major improvement from their 10-15 person pledge class last year. Phi Psi dirty-rushed most of their PC in the fall and it definitely paid off, as they were one of the more selective fraternities this spring. I can’t speak for the quality of the guys, but I’m sure they’re happy about the group they got. FIJI and Beta both continue to prove that they’re solid fraternities by collecting good PCs, but FIJI was especially impressive this year. Delta Sig built on its successful PC last year, grabbing another 20ish person, but high quality group. Phi Society, despite what I assumed about them on my previous post, absolutely nailed it with this year’s PC, grabbing over 25 guys. Definitely look for these guys to show improvement after a shaky past few years. Alpha Sig continues to roll-in above average guys despite being on 14th. Finally, Theta Chi managed to cross-rush pretty hard with a lot of better fraternities, and nabbed a pretty large, high-quality pledge class in the end.

Same Ol’ Same Ol’- DKE, Kappa Sig, KA, Chi Phi, Sigma Chi, Sammy, DU, Sigma Pi, ATO, AEPi, TDX, TKE, Phi Sig

This list consists of houses that continue to get the same quality pledge classes, got a good enough pledge class not to consider them falling, or did not show consistent improvement from the previous year. DKE continues their trend as one of the top two or three fraternities at UVA, getting another very solid group of guys. Kappa Sig, at least from my perspective, had a decent enough rush and remains a great fraternity in a great location. KA consistently prove to do whatever they want, driving around in their pickups to deliver bids, but it seems to always work out for them. Chi Phi and Sigma Chi continue their trend as fraternities trying to break into the top, but not quite making it. Sammy and DU showed no consistent improvement from their very good pledge classes from last year, and will be trending downwards if they don’t nail it again next rush. Sigma Pi pulled in a group that was nothing special, but one that was better than last year’s group. AEPi definitely had a better PC last year, but they didn’t absolutely drop the ball this year, especially given their already narrow pool. ATO actually did alright with their pledge class; given that almost nobody ever talks about them, though, they’re a little hard to judge. TDX, despite being very annoying, did alright. Phi Sig and TKE continue to be uninspiring but present and retaining decent numbers.

Falling- The Hall, SAE, PIKA, Phi Delt, Pi Kap, Pi Lamb, ZBT/SERP

These fraternities are either The Hall, and got demolished during rush, or have consistently gotten below average pledge classes for what’s expected of them. The Hall got wrecked by DKE and Elmo, so I don’t see them as on the same level as where they were last year, but they’ll probably be fine come next spring. SAE continues to get small, average quality pledge classes, and despite throwing some good tailgates, are definitely fading towards the middle tier. PIKA is definitely still losing ground and fading deeper into the middle tier (I’d have them as upper middle and trending down still at this point), which is pretty sad to see as they are an Alpha Chapter. Phi Delt had around 20 guys show up for final hours, and got another low quality pledge class for what they’re used to. Pi Kap had even less guys than Phi Delt show up for final hours (I have a friend in there, and heard it was something like 15 people). Pi Lamb got a way smaller pledge class than last year, and needs to build up its numbers if it wants to stick around. Lastly, ZBT/SERP I threw on here out of consolation. I heard both took part in rush (at least I know ZBT did, but I’m not sure about SERP) and neither got a PC. So much for the ZBT recolonization effort.

Sorry, took awhile. The last post seemed to be well received, so I thought I'd leave another one. Anyways, here's what I heard or know from this year's fraternity rush. I tried to be as objective as possible, but at the end of the day it's still my personal opinion so there is some bias and people will almost certainly disagree with me somewhere.

Does SERP have more money than the Hall? I mean - how do they even pay their bills with such low membership numbers?

Sammy, ATO, and DU are all on the rise as well. Sammy has a huge pledge class, ATO got their biggest pledge class ever, and DU's pledge class way WAY better than this past year.

Sammy out of all the fraternities on here was the one I heard the least about. I have some friends in there, but beyond "it went well" I didn't hear much about their rush. I was very tempted to put ATO as on the rise, but last year Pi Lamb got 20 pledges and this year got 12, so unless a fraternity that is consistently struggling opens up two or three years of tremendous success I'd generally have them as not rising. Hearing what you said about DU is a little interesting, honestly. I know some of the kids who went DU this year, and while the guys I know in there raved about this new pledge class, I didn't really feel like they lived up to the hype; I mean, 23 is a solid number of pledges, but I think their pledge class last year was significantly better.

Also, size doesn't speak for quality. A common rush tactic is to go for higher numbers (and increased dues) while sacrificing overall pledge class quality. A number of fraternities have been guilty of this in the past.

With one of the higher turn outs for open house, every round at DU was much more competitive than in the years before. This resulted in a lot of high quality guys in their pledge class, probably beating out last year.

Elmo stealing Hall prospects? Top Hall prospects usually cross rush with dke or zte, but not really Elmo...this must be from a GDI perspective. Zte did steal a guy or two, but in retrospect we are probably better off without them. The Hall's party on Saturday was still dope tho.
