fraternity movement

by: Hoo

In continuing the trend of discussing how houses have performed recently over bothering with the always disputed tier rankings, I thought I'd take a stab at what fraternities have really improved over the past couple years, what fraternities have stayed the same in quality, and what houses have been falling recently. The lists below is in no particular order of how I think rankings should be:

Rising Houses- Beta, Sammy, Delta Sig, FIJI, Alpha Sig, DU (maybe)

All of these fraternities got good pledge classes (for where they've been in the past) and have been raising the number and quality of sororities they're mixing with. FIJI got a mixer with DG that they refuse to shut up about on here, Sammy and DZ mix constantly, Beta mixed with Pi Phi a little (can't confirm, but heard they did), Delta Sig mixed with Zeta, and DU even managed a progressive with DZ. All have thrown decent parties in the past year (contest the term "decent" if you want, but this statement is accurate to me based on my definition of it). DU and Alpha Sig are by far the most questionable of these frats; however, I think DU's 25 person pledge class and recent mixer with DZ are good signs on their part, and while Alpha Sig is on 14th they grabbed a really solid PC that's looking to improve their reputation. It's also probably worth noting that the first four houses cross-rush quality guys every year.

Same Ol' Same Ol’ Fraternities- DKE, Elmo, The Hall, KA, Kappa Sig, Phi Psi, Chi Phi, Sigma Chi, Theta Chi, AEPi, Phi Sig, TKE

This list consists of either fraternities that are already generally recognized and solidified as somewhere near the top, or houses that haven’t really made much of a jump in recent years. DKE had an enormous pledge class this past rush, but when you’re already one of the best houses at UVA that isn’t really what I would consider “improving,” rather it’s more what should be expected. I personally can’t stand The Hall, but to say they’re trending downwards just because I don’t like them and think they’re pretentious would be petty. Elmo, KA, and Kappa Sig continue to throw great parties and get decent pledge classes. Phi Psi, Chi Phi, and Sigma Chi are all fraternities that have been working very hard to vault themselves towards the top, but haven't managed to do it just yet. They’re still solid, but I wouldn’t call them rising. Theta Chi is about on par with DU, but hasn’t really made much impact since their new house. AEPi and Phi Sig have great individual guys in them, but don’t particularly shine as brotherhoods; that said they’ve consistently gotten decent sized pledge classes. TKE may have moved up a few spots with their new house, but it’s so far away that I can’t see them breaking into the upper ranks anytime soon.

Head Scratchers and Downward Trenders- SAE, PIKA, Zete, Phi Society, Phi Delt, Pi Kap, Sigma Pi, ATO, TDX, Pi Lamb

These houses were either some of the best in the past that have fallen off recently, ones that I have heard very little about but know are definitely not trending upwards from what I do hear, or have lost ground. SAE and PIKA used to be two of the better regarded fraternities at UVA, but both have been shaky since they got into trouble in recent years. As an Alpha Chapter at UVA, PIKA should honestly be much better, but has not excelled as much as expected since they got removed from suspension a couple years back. SAE is incessantly mocked for their reputation as a strictly southern fraternity, and while they do host some good tailgates, their last PC was nothing spectacular. Zete’s five person pledge class speaks for itself, so I don’t think I need to go into too much more depth on them. Phi Delt was once the academic and leadership giant of Greek life here, but they've fallen behind in the past year. Pi Kap and Sigma Pi were at one point looking like they were getting better, but they’ve really hurt themselves after a bad year of rush. TDX and Pi Lamb have been struggling to get small PCs. Phi Society and ATO I’ll admit I have heard almost nothing about recently. Phi Society got in a little bit of trouble last spring and I don’t know if they’re out of the doghouse yet, but if they are then I’d put them as on-par with Delta Sig and Beta but slipping from both.

Except last year Pi Lam had a 20 kid pledge class and this year got 12. But otherwise you are right.

Could someone do a remake of these with the new PCs in account?

This was created before new pledge classes were established. They didn't do great last year, but I heard they improved this year. I've heard enough about most fraternities in the past few weeks, so I'll make another one with short summaries sometime soon.

Fiji has mixed with DG in the past before, and they also mix with Pi Phi. Idk why this is new news. In addition to those two sororities, Fiji has had mixers with DZ and Zeta in the past year.

Sammy does mix with DZ but they also mix with Zeta too. I heard Sammy got invited to Zeta's brunch they have on Fridays.

Not sure about Beta and Pi Phi, but Beta has mixed with A phi in the last year or so. Beta also mixes a lot with Zeta.

Pretty sure Delta Sig has not mixed with Zeta...though I wouldn't be surprised because Zeta mixes with everyone... I just know Zeta had a mixer with AEPi and with Alpha Sig this past year (in addition to the ones mentioned before). Pretty sure DZ has also mixed with Alpha Sig but I could be mistaken.

DU did have a progressive with DZ, but very few people went haha But I think KD and DU might mix in the near future.

Theta Chi tries to have mixers (with AXO, Zeta, Chi O), and if they are successful in getting a sorority to agree with it, very few people show up because their house is so far and out of the way.

Idk about other fraternities, but Sigma Pi and AXO mixed before a football game this past year.

Sigma Pi trying desperately to pull a PR humble brag about mixing with AXO on here. Shocker.
